Welcome back, everyone.
At 14 years old, Elle Fanning finally made it. Yes.
Now her name is on the list of the most admired, most desirable young actresses
in Hollywood.
So besides having a movie star for a big sister, how else did Fanning get her
name on that A-list?
Let's return to the lesson on line 10 and find out.
Elle Fanning.
Later in 2011, she had lead roles in We Bought a Zoo and Twixt.
And these were hardly her first endeavors on the silver screen.
Fanning started her acting career before she was even three.
Her sister's fame helped her at first - twice she played younger versions of her
sister Dakota's movie characters.
In 2003 she got a part in Daddy Day Care, the beginning of her own road to
becoming a celebrity.
Slowly but surely she began to build her acting career, with roles in several
more films and multiple TV shows.
So Elle Fanning is making her name in Hollywood, on the A-list definitely.
She has had some movies in the past but made her first big debut, her first
really big role last summer in the movie Super 8 by Steven Spielberg.
And later in 2011, she had lead roles in We Bought a Zoo and Twixt.
And so we see that she is continuing to be in the limelight.
That's right.
She has started her career off well and is taking these lead roles.
It's impressive to be only 14 years old taking lead roles in such big movies.
That is very impressive, Kaylah.
I could not imagine being in the situation at her age.
But it does come with a lot of pressure.
That's right.
There is definitely a lot of pressure involved in this.
But this seems to be something she enjoys.
Well, these movies, We Bought a Zoo and Twixt, as well as Super 8, were really
not her first.
That's right.
These were hardly her first.
We see the word "hardly" there just means not even her first.
She has been involved in other endeavors.
That's right.
And an "endeavor" is something you are doing, so is an effort or attempt to do
something.
Are you endeavoring to become an artist?
Are you endeavoring to be a good English learner?
I hope you are.
I hope you're working towards learning English.
And we see that these endeavors were on the "silver screen." And that's just the
film industry.
That's a phrase we use to describe, or another name for the film industry.
It's kind of a fun name to describe the film industry.
Talking about movies as a silver screen makes it seem very... very fancy.
That's right.
You've made it to the silver screen, you've accomplished something great in the
film industry.
Well, Fanning started her acting career before she was even three years old,
Kaylah.
So she started at a very young age.
And so that sentence "She... they were hardly her first," absolutely makes sense
because she is 14.
So that means she's been in acting for 11 years, so they were hardly her first.
They're definitely not first.
Three, Brandon!
That is very young.
And Kaylah, she had some help from her older sister.
Her sister's fame kind of helped Elle.
It helped her at first - twice she actually played younger versions of her
sister.
Now if you see a movie with a child actor in it, sometimes they go back in the
story and you see the child much younger.
Well, obviously that can't be the same kid playing the part because they're not
that young anymore.
So you need a younger version of them.
And a "version" is just a form of something.
So you can imagine in a movie, Elle played a version of her sister.
She looks similar; and so she was able to play, pretend as if she were... was
her older sister in those movies.
That's right, so just a little bit different but very similar.
Which, Brandon, when sisters play the same thing, they look pretty similar.
They sure do.
And so we see that she had a lot of experience from a very young age.
And as we continue we see that in 2003 she got a part in Daddy Day Care.
Maybe you've heard of that movie, but this is just more of her experience.
She was also in this movie.
And we see that "the beginning of her own road to becoming a celebrity." This
was the beginning.
She was making her own way now to becoming a celebrity.
That's right. We see the phrase "road to becoming." Now that's a cool phrase
that we use.
It means you're on your way to.
If you think about a road, and you're making your way to a new place, it's the
way, the path, the journey that you take.
And that's what this refers to.
It's the "road to becoming," so it's how she makes her way to becoming a
celebrity.
But it can take some time to get down that road to be a big star.
So next we see: Slowly but surely she began to build her acting career.
Now we see this phrase "slowly but surely." That means it takes a lot of time,
but you eventually get to where you want to go.
That's right.
Now if we want to think of a visual example of slowly but surely, if you're
stuck in traffic on your way going somewhere,
you're going, you're going slowly but you are going.
And that's what that means.
It's you're still continuing even if it's taking some time.
And she was able to do this, to go slowly but surely, by being or taking roles
in several more films and multiple TV shows.
And so she was in many, many TV shows; "multiple TV shows" meaning many shows
that she took part in.
That's right, "multiple" meaning many of the same type.
So they're all TV shows.
That was this type that they are.
But they're not just one show.
She tried a bunch of different shows.
Well, maybe you are interested in some of Elle Fanning's movies or TV shows.
You can go and check those out.
Maybe you will be interested in what she has done so far.
That'll be great to check out some of her movies.
But you know, now you know her history, it might be a little interesting.
You know, tomorrow we're going to find out more about her, where she's headed
now.
But for now, this is our Grammar on the Go sentence, so let's visit Liz.
And then see today's skit.
Hello, friends.
I hope you're doing well today.
My name is Liz.
And it's time for Grammar on the Go.
We're talking about young Elle Fanning in today's article.
And here's today's Grammar Tip sentence:
Slowly but surely she began to build her acting career, with roles in several
more films and multiple TV shows.
Our focus today is on the phrase at the beginning of the sentence, slowly but
surely.
It's a great phrase to use when you want to talk about how something happens
very slowly, but progress is very certain.
Sometimes things happen so slowly that people wonder if there is progress or
not.
But if you want to let your audience know that something is happening even
though it's taking a long time,
then you can use "slowly but surely." For example:
If you practice English ten minutes every day, slowly but surely your English
will improve.
You can use other adverbs too.
For example, you can say "slowly but cleverly" to talk about how someone is slow
at doing something but acts in a very smart way, like:
In the movie, a secret agent slowly but cleverly collects valuable pieces of
information from a terrorist organization.
You can also say "quickly but carefully," like when you want to tell someone how
they have to be fast when doing something,
but they also need to be careful as they're doing it, as in:
Quickly but carefully pour the hot gravy over the rice.
If you look at today's Grammar Tip section in your Studio Classroom magazine,
you'll find more example sentences there.
That's it for today.
This is Liz with Grammar on the Go signing off.
Bye-bye.
Oh, look.
Here's an article about Elle Fanning.
Ah!
I love Elle Fanning.
What does the article say?
It says Elle Fanning has a lot to celebrate.
Like what?
Well, she just turned 14.
Happy Birthday, Elle.
And she's finishing the eighth grade.
Goodbye, eighth grade.
Yeah. And she enjoys an enviable spot on Hollywood's A-list.
Ah... That's super fantastic.
Yeah.
Before, Elle was just Dakota Fanning's little sister.
But now she's stepping out into her own limelight.
I know.
Oh. She was in that hit sci-fi flick Super 8.
Super 8 was super fantastic.
Yeah.
She was also in We Bought a Zoo.
That was funny.
Yeah. That was a funny one.
But she's had endeavors on the silver screen even before that.
Really?
Yeah. She was acting before she was three.
What kind of roles?
Little girl roles.
Oh. Twice she played a younger version of her sister's character.
Well, they do look alike.
Yeah, they do.
And later, she was in Daddy Day Care.
Love that movie.
Yeah. And that put her on the road to becoming a celebrity.
And slowly but surely she's building her acting career.
Yeah, both in the movies and on TV.
Ah!
(Music).
(Chinese).
And we're running out of time again. I'll see you tomorrow.
Bye-bye.
Thank you, Michelle.
Well, she prefers using her middle name rather than her first name.
That's kind of common.
I know some people who do that.
And her hair is naturally curly; but she keeps it straight.
I know a few girls who do that too.
So that's not too unusual.
She was born in Georgia and grew up in California.
I guess it's kind of normal now for people to move around.
So maybe Elle Fanning is a regular teen girl after all. Hmm.
Friends, more tomorrow with our PROFILE featuring Elle Fanning.
Until then, have a great day.
