My name is Steve.
Thanks for joining us today.
Elle Fanning is a rising Hollywood star.
And apart from winning an award or two, it's hard to imagine Fanning's star
rising much higher.
She's young.
She's beautiful.
She's on Hollywood's A-list.
She's worked with famous directors like Steven Spielberg.
And if that weren't enough, Elle Fanning has something of a career as a high
fashion model.
Let's learn about that today as we go into our reading, A fan of fashion, at the
top of page 45.
Elle Fanning.
A fan of fashion.
On top of her rising status as a skilled actress, Fanning has shown a talent for
high fashion.
She's wowed the media with her sophisticated looks in big fashion magazines like
Vogue, Marie Claire and Vanity Fair.
Last fall she was the face of the clothing line Marc by Marc Jacobs.
She sat in the distinguished front row at his show during New York Fashion Week.
Hello, friends.
Thank you so much for joining us here in the studio.
My name is Kaylah.
And my name is Brandon.
We're talking about Elle Fanning.
And this is, of course, the second day of our Elle Fanning article.
Yesterday we found out a little about her life.
That's right.
We found out that she's just a regular teenage girl.
She's turning 14 and graduating from eighth grade.
So she seems pretty normal until you find out she's on Hollywood's A-list.
That's right.
She's actually a rising star.
She's becoming more and more famous.
So I don't think she's such a regular kind of girl, Kaylah.
Probably not, Brandon. Not many 14-year-old girls are rising Hollywood stars.
Well, part of her fame comes from her name.
We recognize the last name Fanning from her sister.
That's right.
Her older sister, Dakota Fanning, is very famous, has been in many films and TV
shows.
And she was kind of actually in her sister's shadow for a while.
But now she has stepped out of that shadow into her own limelight.
That's right.
She's been in a couple of blockbuster hits.
Last summer's Super 8 as well as last winter's the... We Bought a Zoo and Twixt.
So she's making her name in Hollywood for sure.
But we see today we begin with that she is a fan of fashion, or we realize or
find out that she is actually a fan of fashion.
And we go on to: "On top of her rising status as a skilled actress..." This
phrase here "on top of" just means in addition to.
That's right.
In addition to being a famous and rising actress, this Fanning, Elle Fanning has
shown a talent for high fashion.
Now we don't mean designing high fashion.
She is very good at modeling high fashion, which, Brandon, is actually very
difficult.
It is very difficult.
High fashion is something to do with fashion that is kind of maybe very
elaborate, something that would also be very expensive.
So she's really into fashion.
Maybe you're into fashion.
Maybe you're watching to see what she is wearing because oftentimes stars set
trends.
And so I'm sure she will be setting some trends as well.
That's right.
She definitely has a high status in both Hollywood as well as high fashion.
Now a "status" means an accepted or official place.
So maybe they don't give you an official place as a high fashion model, but we
accept them as that.
And we accept her both as an actress and as a model.
So that is her status.
And she's wowed the media with her sophisticated looks.
If you "wow" someone, people look at you and say: Wow! That's amazing.
And so if she's maybe... maybe someone is wearing something beautiful, and they
walk into the room, and you just stand in amazement.
Well, you can kind of wow others with what you're wearing or in other ways as
well.
That's right.
Now what wows them is how young she is and is so sophisticated at such a young
age.
Now to be "sophisticated" means you have a very good understanding of the way
things should be as well as, in this case, look.
So a sophisticated person, probably I would say the most sophisticated person in
the world would be the Queen of England.
That's true. She is very sophisticated.
When you look at her, you can tell that everything is in place, and she's very
sophisticated.
Well, we see here that Elle Fanning looks very sophisticated in big fashion
magazines like Vogue and other magazines as well.
That's right. She's famous.
We saw her model in a couple of different spreads for Vogue, Marie Claire and
Vanity Fair,
all three of which we accept as the leading magazines in fashion for the Western
world.
And so again, we're seeing how she is stepping out of her sister's shadow here
and she's making a name for herself.
Last fall she was actually the face of the clothing line Marc by Marc Jacobs.
Now "Marc" is not usually spelled this way in English, Brandon. We know that.
It's usually spelled with a "K" on the end.
But Marc Jacobs is a very, very famous designer of clothing, of high fashion
clothing.
And his brand name is his first name Marc, spelled with a C.
It's kind of what makes it special.
It is special. And we see here that she was the face of this.
So she was the face of this clothing line, meaning she was kind of the
representative of this clothing line.
And we say clothing line, sometimes we think a clothing line can be where you
hang clothes to dry.
But in this case, when we're talking about a fashion clothing line, that means
all of the clothes by this designer.
So she's the face of that.
And Kaylah, she even was able to sit in the distinguished front row at his show
during New York Fashion Week - talking about Marc Jacobs' show.
And we have the word distinguished here.
Well, "distinguished" means respected or admired.
Now that can be a person or a place or a thing.
So here, what is distinguished is the thing at the front row seats.
It is admirable to sit in the front row of a Marc Jacobs' fashion show.
Well, Kaylah, I'm wondering what you would feel like in this situation.
Wow, it's such a distinguished place, I don't now.
I think I would feel very honored to be there, but maybe that I didn't dress
properly because it's a fashion show.
Well, that's a good point.
And you may have some things to think about as well from this article as far as
what you would feel like if you were Elle Fanning.

This is one of our most popular magazines.
Really? Aren't those magazines made for young girls?
Some of them are, Ken.
But now there are fashion magazines for all ages as well as for both men and
women.
They range from high fashion to the mainstream fashions that people buy in
department stores.
I didn't know there was a difference.
Hey, I noticed you used both "fashion" singular and "fashions" plural.
Did you mean to do that?
Yes, I did.
Fashion, singular, refers to a particular style or trend while "fashions" refer
to individual clothing items.
OK. Could I say all the fashions in the store represent the latest fashion?
Yes. That would mean all the clothes in the store are designed using the latest
fashion.
Good job.
So are the clothes you're wearing an example of high fashion?
Oh no, not at all.
High fashion refers to very expensive clothes made by famous designers and worn
by models.
My outfit really isn't in fashion.
In fashion?
Does that mean your clothes are out fashion or fashion out or...?
The phrase is "out of fashion." And you're right, Ken. It's the opposite.
Hey, let's have Doris explain the difference for us.
OK.
When something is "in fashion," it is very popular, and people would spend a lot
of money to have it.
Examples include clothing, shoes or hairstyles that are in fashion.
If something is out of fashion, it is no longer popular, and may be considered
old-fashioned.
OK. That makes sense.
I definitely don't want anyone to think that I'm old-fashioned.
Say, do you have any fashion magazines for men over there?
Sure.
