With her good looks, her fame, her famous older sister and taste for high
fashion, is it really possible for Elle Fanning to be a regular 14-year-old
girl?
Well, finally we're going to learn the answer to this question in this next
section of our reading under the heading - Just a normal girl.
Elle Fanning.
Just a normal girl.
Away from the cameras, Fanning leads a fairly normal life.
She goes to school, has homework and takes tests and final exams like other kids
her age.
Even when she is away from the classroom for filming, she was a teacher on-set.
Her hobbies include drawing, dancing and horseback riding.
And like any normal teen girl, she gets starstruck by famous celebrities.
She loves Beyonce and is a fan of model Alexa Chung.
While her fame is quickly catching up to big sis Dakota's, Elle says they don't
try to outdo each other on film.
Elle Fanning's own acting career is just taking off, and her future looks
bright.
Elle Fanning is a fascinating young lady.
She is famous in both Hollywood and in the fashion circles as a high fashion
model, and very sophisticated for her age.
But despite all of that, she seems to be just a normal girl.
That's right. And we find out why.
Because away from the cameras, Fanning leads a fairly normal life.
She leads a fairly normal life.
What does that mean, Kaylah?
When we say you "lead a life," that means that's how you live.
It's the way you are experiencing life.
Simply said, she lives a normal life.
And we see here the word "fairly." That means pretty much or almost, we would
characterize or describe her life as normal.
Well, it can only be close to normal, Brandon, because we all know even if it's
fairly normal, she's still very famous.
That's right.
But she goes to school.
She has homework and takes tests and even final exams.
Kaylah, sometimes I look at movie stars and I think: Do they have to go to
school like everyone else?
But we see here that she does.
Actually, Brandon, I know that most famous child actors not... do not attend
school in a school.
Very often they have a tutor that is with them.
So this does make her much more normal than a lot of stars because she goes to a
school with other kids that her... are her own age,
instead of spending all of her time on movie sets, which, I think, is very
healthy.
That is healthy.
But of course, she does have to make these movies.
So when she goes to make the movies, when she's on the set, she does have
someone there helping her.
She has a tutor there to help her.
That's right.
They say they have an on-set teacher.
So even when she is away from the classroom filming, she has an on-set teacher.
Now what does it mean to be on set?
Well, of course we use this in the film industry to talk about the place where
you're actually filming.
Here at Studio Classroom, we have a set.
We are on set right now.
That's right.
We are "on set," meaning on the location, in the location where something is
being filmed.
And what also makes her kind of normal is that she has hobbies.
She likes to draw, she likes to dance, and she likes to go horseback riding.
What is horseback riding, Kalyah?
Well, it's exactly what it sounds like.
It's when you ride a horse, we call that horseback riding.
So she seems pretty normal.
I know a lot of high school and junior high girls back where I live in Colorado,
they'd enjoy horseback riding.
It's a very normal thing to do when you live in an area with horses.
But dancing and drawing, no matter where you are in the world, those seem to be
fairly normal.
So that makes her fairly normal.
So we see here that she's not actually too busy to take part in these normal
activities.
That's the message that it's trying to be, to...
What we're trying to stay here, basically, is that yeah, she does normal things
just like other teenage girls, and she has time to do that.
She goes to school.
She has hobbies.
And like any normal teen girl, she gets starstruck by famous celebrities.
When you are "starstruck," that means that you have feelings of great, or even
sometimes too much, respect and admiration for somebody famous.
So maybe I think someone that I would be starstuck with would be the actor
Leonardo DiCaprio.
If I saw him, I would be starstruck.
I would be so amazed to see him that I probably couldn't talk.
And I think I would be starstruck maybe if I were to see Natalie Portman, for
example.
Well, we all get starstruck.
And the good thing, something that makes Elle Fanning just as normal as the rest
of us is that she does this as well.
In fact, she loves Beyonce and is a fan of the model Alexa Chung.
So she has... she's a fan just like the rest of us.
And while her fame is quickly catching up to big sis Dakota's, Elle says they
don't try to outdo each other.
That's good.
That's a good thing to do.
Now we see we described her older sister as her older "sis." Now sis, S-I-S, is
a shortened and casual way of saying sister.
Now this is OK to use in conversations, but not OK to use in your formal
writing.
We use it here at Studio Classroom to help you learn a new word.
And we also have the word here, "outdo." If you try to outdo someone, you're
always thinking about doing better than someone else.
Maybe you are in a competition of some sort, and you're trying to outdo another
person.
You're trying to do better than that person.
It's very good that they're not trying to outdo each other on film.
Although they're sisters, I'm sure they still have fun, sisterly competitions.
But they're not trying to ruin each other's careers.
That's right.
And it's not good for us to compare ourselves with other people all the time.
We can just do our very best.
That's right.
That's a good thing we can learn from the Fanning sisters.
Elle is not trying to do better than her sister.
She's just doing her best at what she enjoys.
Well, Elle Fanning's own acting career is just taking off, and her future looks
bright.
That's right. Her career is taking off.
She's becoming more and more successful, and her future looks bright.
And that's certainly a good thing.
If your future looks bright, that means you're expected to have lots of success
in the future.
She does have a bright future ahead of her, some great things coming up for her.
Well, we hope her future is as bright as her older sister's has been.
