Hi, everybody.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
Thanks for joining us today.
My name is Steve.
Now the next time you're in a coffee shop or a fast food restaurant, take a look
around,
and you'll probably see someone using a cell phone to take a picture of her
friends or of herself.
Now the photos might be OK for posting on the Internet, but would they be
considered a work of art?
Well, today's DIY feature shows us how to take great photos using our cellphone.
Let's turn to page 16 and read tip number one: Plan your photo.
Tips for Taking Great Cellphone Photos.
How to make your memories into works of art.
Now that most cellphones have built-in cameras, taking photos is easy.
But to make your cellphone snapshots look really good, try following these tips.
1. Plan your photo.
First, identify your subject - the person or object you're taking the picture
of.
Place the subject a little bit to one side, not in the center.
Surround the subject with contrasting colors to make it stand out.
Lines from walls, sidewalks or fences can point to the subject, creating an
interesting picture.
Cheese!
Did you take the picture?
Yes.
Oh. Hello, friends.
Thank you so much for joining us today.
Yes. Kaylah and I were taking a picture.
But we didn't have a normal camera, so we use my cellphone.
That's right. Today we're talking about taking pictures with your cellphone.
Yes. Now oftentimes when you are using a cellphone to take pictures, they don't
turn out very well.
They don't look good.
So we would like to give you some tips on how to take great photos with your
cellphone.
Which is so nice because often we're out and about, we're in town, we're out
with friends,
and we don't have an actual camera but we would like to remember this.
So we're talking about how to make your memories into works of art.
Yes. Now a work of art is something that is beautiful, something that people
want to look at and admire.
And most of the time, Kaylah, I know the pictures I take are not works of art.
I know. Sometimes we don't take very good pictures.
But this is an article that's going to help us use our cameras that are in our
cellphones to help get better pictures.
So you know, Ryan, maybe you can improve from this.
I hope so, and I hope you can improve too.
I know I've seen many of you out taking pictures of yourselves or pictures of
your friends, and now you can take even better pictures with your cellphone.
Well, now that most cellphones have built-in cameras, taking photos is pretty
easy.
That's true.
Almost everyone has a cellphone, and almost every cellphone has a camera, so of
course it's very easy to take photos with these built-in cameras.
Now it says most cameras... most cellphones have built-in cameras.
My cellphone is so old that I do not have a built-in camera, so I do not get to
learn much from this lesson.
But maybe if I get a better phone one day, I can.
But this term "built-in," what does that really mean?
Well, something that is built-in means it comes as part of something else.
So if a cellphone has a built-in camera, that means that there is a camera that
is part of the cellphone.
Now can we use that in other places?
Of course. You can have a car that has a built-in stereo.
That means you can play music from a stereo that is part of your car.
Perfect! Great example.
So we're talking about built-in cameras that are already in your phone.
But it's hard to get a good picture.
So to make your cellphone snapshots look really good, try following these tips.
All right. A "snapshot" is just another word for a picture or a photograph.
And usually, Kaylah, when you're taking snapshots, it's pretty quick.
You just... usually with your cellphone, you pull it out and take the picture
really fast.
That's right.
Now "snap," we know is a very quick thing.
So that will help you remember that a snapshot is a photo that you take quickly
that often you don't spend time posing for.
Exactly. So we're going to give you some helpful tips to make your snapshots a
helpful work of art.
That's right.
So Numeber One, we're starting off, plan your photo.
Hmm. That makes sense.
It does.
Plan what you want to do.
Yeah. Now actually, Kaylah, sometimes people don't do this.
They just take out their cellphone and take the picture right away without
thinking about what it will look like.
So you should plan your photo.
All right. First, identify your subject.
Now "subject" is a key word here, but it also is just part of our sentence.
So if we keep reading we see the subject is the person or object you're taking
the picture of.
Just like when you write a paper or you watch a movie, the subject is what that
is about.
So the subject of a picture is what the picture is focused on.
Exactly. If you're taking a picture of yourself, then you are the subject.
OK. Now you should know what your subject is and place that subject a little bit
to one side, don't put them in the middle.
That's very interesting.
Often we think that in a picture, we want the subject right in the middle
because it's easy to focus and it's easy to see them.
But to make the picture more interesting, put the subject a little bit to the
side, not in the center.
Yeah. Now this is actually an interesting idea.
Make sure they're off to the side, your picture will look a little bit better.
OK. Now make sure your subject is not in the very middle of the picture, and you
need to surround the subject with contrasting colors.
Now what does "contrasting" mean?
Well, "contrasting" simply means very different.
So you could say contracting colors might be red and blue.
They're very different colors and they go well together.
Yes. And if something is contrasting, it looks very different.
It makes the person stand out or makes the subject stand out, which means it
looks like it's actually uh, easier to see, sticks out of the picture.
Or fences can point to the subject as well, creating a very interesting-looking
picture.
That's right.
Using lines... natural lines, fences, walls and sidewalks can make an
interesting picture.
We have more tips coming up.
But first, let's check in with the Chat Room.
Hi, Ken.
Anything interesting in the newspaper?
Oh. Hi, Bryan.
Not really.
I'm just reading about last night's big basketball game.
Oh, right.
The Bulls versus the Lakers.
Derrick Rose had an outstanding game.
Uh... he played a great game, if that's what you mean.
Yes. Outstanding means excellent.
His performance was excellent.
Hey, how many points did he score exactly?
Well, he scored 35 points, and 20 of those were in the last quarter.
Wow! He was definitely one of the game's standouts.
Standouts? Now I'm confused.
"Outstanding" is an adjective, and "standout" is a noun?
You got it.
Someone who was a standout is one who is better than others or who outperforms
them.
So I can either say Rose had an outstanding game or Rose was one of the game's
standouts?
Yes, you can, although it may be more common to say that Rose was one of the
game's standout players.
OK, I'll try to remember that.
Don't we also use the phrase "stand out" in art and photography as in "making a
subject stand out in a picture"?
Yes. That's a great example.
That means you want the subject of the picture to be very noticeable and easy to
spot.
I see.
Well, I'm going to keep reading the sports section.
I want to find some more standout players.
And I'm going to get to work.
I'm tired of all this standing.
