Hi, everybody.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
My name is Steve.
Thanks for joining us today.
We at Studio Classroom enjoy highlighting inventions and organizations that
exist for the purpose of improving the lives of those who have significant
needs.
Do you remember when we discussed liquid glasses, a cheap but effective way to
help people see?
Or, how about the nPower PEG, a handheld device that creates electricity
anytime, anywhere?
Well now, we're going to look at another innovative invention called the Rocket
Stove.
So let's turn to page 20 and find out what this stove does.
The Paradigm Project.
Improving lives with better stoves.
Name one object that can improve a family's health, be an investment for the
future of a community and is environmentally sustainable.
Give up?
According to the founders of The Paradigm Project, the answer is... a stove.
Believe it or not, a device called the Rocket Stove can drastically improve the
lives of the billions of people who cook over open fires worldwide.
This clean-burning stove produces up to 50 percent less smoke than a traditional
cooking fire.
Less smoke means family members have less chance of developing respiratory
illnesses, which are often the result of exposure to indoor cooking smoke.
Hello, friends. Thank you so much for joining us right here in the studio.
We are now taking a look at our ORGANIZATIONS article looking at an organization
called The Paradigm Project.
The Paradigm Project.
Now that is an interesting word, "paradigm." That's not how you would think you
say it.
So say it with us, friends, paradigm.
A paradigm, it's not pronounced "pa-ra-di-g-m," OK.
A paradigm is referring to a pattern or the way that something is done.
Now an example of this, Kaylah, would be that currently using Facebook to
communicate with people is a current social paradigm.
That's currently the way that things are done today.
OK. So would you say maybe making friends at school is a paradigm we've always
had?
Yeah, you could say that.
That's a certain pattern of the way things are done.
Or using multimedia at school is an educational paradigm.
This is a pretty high-level word that we're using to describe this organization.
Well, "paradigm" is actually their name.
It's not just a description.
Their name is The Paradigm Project.
And they're improving lives with better... stoves?
With better stoves! OK.
So we'll see how this organization is using stoves in the house to improve
people's lives.
Now just to make sure we're clear, Ryan, are we talking about your normal stove
that you cook food in?
Well, we're talking about a stove that has multi-purposes, as many different
uses.
But it's still a stove?
Yes, it is still, in that sense, a stove.
OK. Well, let's find out how can they improve... lives with a stove.
OK. Uh... well.
Name one object that you can... that can improve a family's health, be an
investment for the future of a community and is environmentally sustainable.
Now the word "sustainable" means that it can continue.
But when we talk about sustainable being involved with the environment, that
means it is good for the environment.
It is not taking away.
You could say sustainable is like saying something is green.
Yeah. It causes very little damage to the environment.
So can you think of something that fits in these categories?
Hmm... Have you given up?
Well, according to the founders of The Paradigm Project, the answer is, well, a
stove.
That's right. It's a stove.
What can improve people's health, it's good for the environment and it's a good
investment?
A stove.
Interesting.
Well, believe it or not, a device called the Rocket Stove can drastically
improve the lives of the billions of people who cook over open wood fires
worldwide.
Now when we say they cook over open fires, that means... what?
Well, many people around the world don't have a stove in a kitchen.
They simply take wood and build a fire, and they cook their food over that fire.
That would be called an open fire.
That is hard to believe that billions of people are still cooking like that
today when so many of us have the convenience of stoves in our homes.
Yeah, that's true.
But this is a great opportunity for these people to now use what's called the
Rocket Stove.
Ooh, the Rocket Stove.
Now "this can drastically improve lives" is what we're finding out.
Now "drastically" is a big word with a lot of meaning.
Mmhm. Something is done drastically, it means it is done quickly or is very
noticeable.
So we can quickly and noticeably improve many of these people's lives.
That's right.
Well, this clean-burning stove produces up to 50 percent less smoke than a
traditional cooking fire.
So less smoke means family members have less smoke they can inhale, you know.
Yeah. Well, we're talking about traditional cooking fires.
That is the same as an open fire.
And like Kaylah said, less smoke means family members have less chance of
developing respiratory illnesses,
which are often the result of exposure to indoor cooking smoke.
So if you have an open fire inside a house, that's a lot of smoke to mess with
your respiratory system.
And "respiratory" means anything to do with breathing; so your lungs, your
mouth, your nose... all the same system.
So if you have a fire inside this new Rocket Stove, it's less likely to cause
respiratory problems.
That's great! Well, I'm excited find out what's coming up.
What's next?
But first, we got to stop in with the Chat Room.
Hi, Ken.
You're reading about camping?
Yeah. This book reminds me of my camping trip last year.
It has lots of pictures of tents and camping fires.
Uh, Ken, no, it's not camping fires.
Tthose fires are called "campfires." And campfire is one word, by the way.
Oh, thanks.
My friend taught me several songs to sing around the campfire.
That does sound fun.
So what did you guys eat while you were camping?
Oh, nothing fancy.
We had chips and candy.
Chips and candy?
Are you serious?
Ken, that's not the right way to camp.
You should have cooked over an open fire.
Open fire?
Bryan, I'm against guns.
And it's just wrong to shoot someone.
No, Ken, not that kind of open fire.
I'm talking about cooking over your campfire.
Oh. So why did they call them "open fires"?
Well, campfires, the kind that burn wood, are called "open fires" because they
burn outside out in the open.
OK. That makes sense.
I noticed you said "over" a campfire or "over" an open fire.
Good point, Ken.
You use the preposition "over" when talking about this kind of cooking.
Does food cooked over an open fire taste different from food cooked in a stove?
It sure does.
Meats cooked over an open fire have a great smoky taste.
Hmm, you're making me hungry.
Make sure you invite me to the next camping trip you take.
I sure will, Ken.
