Hi, everybody.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
Thanks for taking time out of your busy day to study English with us.
My name is Steve.
Well, The Paradigm Project's interest in helping the billions of people in this
world right now who cook over an open flame has resulted in the Rocket Stove.
Rocket Stoves save money.
They save time.
They save trees, and they reduce the amount of smoke that is produced.
It looks like a win-win situation all around.
But wait.
There's something else besides the stove that makes The Paradigm Project
different.
Let's turn to today's reading on page 20 and find out what that is.
The Paradigm Project.
If The Paradigm Project were like most charities, its members would simply
collect donations and pass out free stoves.
But the group, launched in 2009, operates with a completely different mentality.
Instead of giving stoves away, the group helps to create a local industry that
manufactures, sells and distributes the stoves,
thereby creating jobs that support the locally economy.
And, as an added benefit, the locally made stoves sell for about half the price
of imported ones.
Currently, Paradigm has projects in Kenya, Haiti and Guatemala.
The Paradigm Project wants to create lasting change that's not dependent upon
donations.
Of course, the money to get this stove-making process running must come from
somewhere.
Hello, friends.
Thank you so much for joining us again right here in the studio.
Yes. We are looking at day two now of our article all about The Paradigm
Project.
Now yesterday we saw how they are providing these stoves called the Rocket
Stove.
They are very efficient that allows people, Kaylah, to make less wood-gathering
trips.
And there's less smoke, so it's more healthy for the families that use them.
I also think the stove has a very cool name.
I mean, the Rocket Stove?
That is so cool!
Yeah, it makes it sound like it should fly or something.
Well, no matter what, it's a great product and it's doing wonderful things for
billions of people that need it around the world.
It can help.
OK. Now The Paradigm Project was like most charities,
its members would simply collect... oh, if it was, then its members would...
simply collect donations and pass out free stoves.
And at first, Kaylah, this sounds like what the organization does.
That's right. At first, it does sound like that.
If they were a normal agency, this is what they would do.
But that tells us that "if they're..." says that they're not normal.
That's not what they're doing here.
They're not just passing out: Oh. Have a free stove!
They are actually helping the communities that they're taking the stoves to.
Right. It sounds like it would be nice of them to just give away stoves, but
they don't just do that.
There's more to them than that.
This group, launched in 2009, operates with a completely different mentality.
That's great, this word "mentality." That means the way they think about things.
The way they think about things, therefore, how they do things.
So if you have a certain mentality about the way you cook... for example, when I
cook, my mentality is a clean kitchen.
I like to cook and clean up as I go.
But that's not always the case.
Other people have different ways of thinking and then doing.
Right. And most organizations who... or giving most charities, they think their
mentality is just give away free stoves.
But here The Paradigm Project is different.
Instead of giving those stoves away, the group helps to create a local industry
that manufactures, sells and distributes the stoves.
Wow! So they're not just going in and having a stove ready made from somewhere
in the world, taking it to a poor community and giving it away.
Instead, they're going into a community, setting up the ways for them to build
the stove and distribute the stove, thereby creating jobs that support the local
economy.
Yeah. Now here we see the word "thereby." And this word you can simply replace
it with the phrase, as a result.
So as a result of them creating these jobs and distributing these stoves in the
country, as a result, they create jobs that support the local economy.
That's wonderful.
And there's our last piece, Ryan.
We said we wanted to see how it can help with health.
And Ryan, that helps the smoke inhalation.
And then we talked about wanting to make it good for the environment, so that
was by helping cut down on deforestation.
And now we see our final piece.
Exactly. It helps the economy through creating jobs and distributing these
stoves in that economy.
Now as an added benefit, the locally made stoves sell for about half the price
of imported stoves.
That's awesome.
Usually when we're taking products into a less fortunate community, we want to
give them something, it does cost a lot,
so you do have to raise a lot of money.
But if you create the product in that area, you don't have to pay to ship it
into the country.
It's already there!
Exactly. They are making these awesome Rocket Stoves right in that country.
And they simply distribute them or move them or sell them in that country.
Now currently, Paradigm has projects in Kenya, Haiti and Guatemala.
That's right.
Kenya is in Africa.
Haiti is in the Caribbean.
And Guatemala is the country just south of Mexico in Central America.
So we can see they are spreading out all over the world.
But each one of these countries, Ryan, is a poor community country.
We'd say they are not a First World country.
Now I have been to Guatemala.
And I can see that this would be great in a country like that where people do
cook over open fires a lot.
Yeah, I can definitely see that.
Now The Paradigm Project wants to create lasting change that's not dependent
upon donations.
And this is great, they don't need people to give them money.
Well, of course, the money to get this stove-making process running must come
from somewhere.
And we'll find out exactly where it comes from after the break.
But first, let's watch a video.
I'm... my muscles are burning.
And this is just to... just to get this.
And they tell me I'm doing the wrong way too.
(Background Noise).
Yumata just said: Get out of my way. You don't know what you're doing.
Hi. My name is Greg. This is Austin.
And you're watching STOVEMAN.
A year ago I helped start a company called The Paradigm Project.
We work to help communities all over the world to improve their health,
increase their income and reduce their environmental impact through the use of
these - efficient stoves.
Today we're in Kenya.
Here we are. We're out in uh... San Diego.
You can't see palm trees in the desert.
An astounding two and a half billion people in the world still cook every meal
over an open fire, leading to the destruction of millions of trees,
placing a huge financial burden on families and killing millions of women and
children every year through lower respiratory disease.
Best line of the whole entire trip?
"No... it's OK." They're talking about the camel spider.
"It's OK. It's not harmful. It's not harmful, but it can kill you." Thank you!
Thank you for that clarification.
You can't underestimate the value of building relationships with people.
And uh... you know, just how important it is if you're trying to... to do
something,
how you can get through tough times if you've got to trust somebody and just
to... solve your relationship with them.
(Background Noise).
(Music).
... keeps on being built. And that's key.
And I'm making an impact on people.
(Music).
We'll show you what it's like to walk miles to find wood and to live on less
than $2 a day.
And we'll take you with us as we travel around the world toward our goal of
putting stoves in the hands of five million families.
I invite you to join us on this journey, to be a part of our work and help us
touch the lives of millions ofpeople.
