Welcome back, everybody.
150 years ago, people traveled to the West Coast of New Zealand's Southern
Island in search of gold.
Today, people go there every year in search of curious and exotic food.
Let's find out how this strange Wildfoods Festival started on line 12.
New Zealand's Wildfoods Festival.
The small coastal town of Hokitika became famous when gold was discovered there
in the mid-1800s.
But when the gold disappeared in the late 1860s, so did most of the people.
In March 1990, though, local Claire Bryant came up with the idea of a festival
to celebrate the region's food and drink.
Only 1,800 attended the first event, but the festival's popularity grew.
Last year 15,000 people traveled to Hokitika for a chance to try some of the
weird and wonderful dishes.
OK. So we're starting to learn a little bit about where this crazy festival
takes place.
That's right.
The small coastal town of Hokitika is where it takes place, Ryan.
And we learned that is rugged and wild and untamed, just like the festival.
That's right.
And this town first became famous, though, not for the food, but it became
famous when gold was discovered there in the mid-1800s.
So this town has been around for a while; and originally people went there for
gold.
But when the gold disappeared in the late 1860s, so did most of the people.
So Ryan, apparently it used to be a large "gold mining town" is what we would
call it.
But what does it mean that the gold disappeared?
Well, like you said, gold mining is when people try to gather gold and collect
gold.
And so as more people take gold, then it starts to become less and less, and
would eventually disappear, be gone.
So it's not that what they found disappeared, but the gold... they... there was
just no more of it.
There was not any more to bring it out of the earth.
And when the gold is gone, a lot of the people would leave too.
So this happened in the 1860s, it was a small town for a long time.
But then in 1990, something changed.
That's right.
In March of 1990, in fact, local Claire Bryant came up with the idea of a
festival to celebrate the region's food and drink.
So Claire Bryant came up with this idea.
What does that mean she "came up with" something?
Well, if you "come up with" something, it means you think about it on your own,
you are the one who created it.
That's right. It's a new idea, a new plan.
She decided she was going to create this new festival.
It was a brand new idea to celebrate the region - and that means that area's -
food and drink.
OK. I think this idea was to get more people to come to that town to enjoy some
of the region's, or the area's, food and drink.
Well, only... 1,800 people - another way of saying that is "eighteen-hundred"
people - attended the first event.
But the festival's popularity has been growing.
So it was very small in the beginning.
Yeah. Now we see the word "popularity." And that has to do with how many people
like or enjoy something.
And so we saw at first, there wasn't very much popularity, only 1,800 people
came, but then it grew.
That's right. This festival is more popular now.
The popularity of it is growing.
So you know, if you're... if you're... all of us go through school, there's
always the popular kids.
And "popular" means everybody knows them and everybody likes them.
Well, this festival is becoming more popular because last year there was a large
number.
Yeah. There were 15,000 people who traveled to the town for a chance to try some
of the weird and crazy and wonderful dishes.
That's right.
So it started out small in a gold mining town with not much going on, so this
local decided she wanted something to celebrate.
And it has grown into this huge... this festival, it's known internationally
now.
Yeah. And I can see why.
Many people like to ask the question: What is the strangest or the weirdest food
that you've eaten?
And so this will be a great place to try something new.
That's right.
Now yesterday... now earlier we just talked about the scorpions that you can eat
and all the different insects and stuff.
You can actually see a picture of a man eating a scorpion in your Studio
Classroom magazine.
So you should check that out because oh... it does not look delicious.
It actually looks a little bit dangerous.
Take a look at page 23 to see for yourself.
That's right.
So all these weird dishes, I'm excited to figure out what exactly these dishes
are, what the foods are.
But we're going to have to talk about it tomorrow because we need to watch this
video.
(Music).
Hokitika Wildfoods Festival, bye-bye.
Hi, everyone. I'm Michelle.
(Chinese).
And time really flies.
I'll see you next time. Bye-bye.
Thank you for those handy tips, Michelle.
We appreciate that.
Now what's the strangest food you've ever eaten?
This is a question I sometimes ask people because, well, we all like to talk
about food, and it makes a great conversation starter.
Well, for me, the strangest food I've ever had is a balut, B-A-L-U-T.
And I don't think I'd ever eat one again.
OK. Later on, why not visit the Studio Classroom English Corner and compare your
strange food with what other English Corner friends have eaten.
You can do that at StudioClassroom.com.
Everyone, have a great Friday.
