(Music).
Welcome back, everybody.
What's it like to live without electricity and other conveniences of modern
life?
Come with us and find out as we visit the Amish.
I should warn you that there's something very appealing to living the Amish way.
If you go visit them, you may not want to leave.
OK. Let's pick up the reading at the top of the right-hand column.
Pennsylvania Dutch Country.
City of Lancaster.
Start exploring in the small, colorful city of Lancaster founded in 1710.
Take the walking tour through the heart of the old city.
A guide dressed in costume will share stories from the city's history.
Next visit the Central Market, the oldest continuously operating farmer's market
in the country.
Join the locals as they shop for fresh fruits and vegetables, meats and baked
goods.
And you won't want to miss the beautiful Amish handicrafts, like quilts and
pillow covers.
Be sure to pick up some Pennsylvania Dutch goodies, like the delicious pies.
The Amish frequently eat them for breakfast!
OK. Join us in the City of Lancaster in the Amish Country in Pennsylvania.
That's right. You can start exploring this small, colorful city which was
founded in 1710.
Or that also means it was started in 1710.
That's right. We see they've been living the same way for 300 years, so 1710
would put us about 300 years ago.
That's right.
Now you can take a walking tour here.
And if you're taking a walking tour, that means you're looking at things while
walking, certainly not driving a car.
That's right. You take a walking tour through the heart of the old city.
Now this does not mean a physical heart.
When we talk about the heart of a non-living thing, that means what is very
important to it, the most valuable part.
So the heart of the city is the most important part.
Right, the most important part. Also, it's usually in the center of that old
city.
And so you can see some history here.
A guide who is dressed in costume will share stories from the city's history.
Now Kaylah, why does it say this guide is dressed "in costume," not dressed "in
a costume"?
Well, "in costume" means they are... it's pretty much the same thing.
They are wearing the traditional wear of what the Amish would wear.
Now if we look in our magazine, we can see pictures of some of the Amish.
And their clothes are very simple.
Just like them, and your guide would be wearing this costume.
Right. So yeah, you can say "in costume" or "in a costume." This is just a
better way to write.
So you can sees some places from this city's history.
That's right.
Well, after you're done your walking tour, next visit the Central Market, the
oldest continuously operating farmer's market in the country.
And we're talking about Pennsylvania, so "country" means the United States.
Exactly. Now this is the oldest continuously operating market in the country...
or farmer's market in the country.
And a farmer's market is a place where farmers can come together and sell what
they grow on their farms.
And "continuously" means it's never stopped and has not paused or been put off.
Now they don't have it open 24 hours a day.
It means that it is always open, it has never stopped being open from the time
they put that market there.
Yeah. It's been operating or working continuously, never stopping from the
moment they started.
So go to the market and join the locals as they shop for fresh fruits and
vegetables, meats and baked goods.
So they do not go to a grocery store or a supermarket.
They get all of their things from what they have made or grown.
Yeah. You can go here and find some of these things at a farmers' market that
were grown on their farms.
And you would not want to miss the beautiful Amish handicrafts.
Handicrafts. This is so true.
The Amish make beautiful handicrafts, like quilts and pillow covers.
They're famous for it.
Yes. Now "handicraft" is something that you make with your hands, not with a
machine.
And it usually takes a lot of skill to make handicrafts.
That's right. It takes skill.
It takes a lot of time because you're making it by hand.
And since they do not use electricity, they are doing this by hand.
Even their sewing machines would be run by hand.
And they make beautiful quilts, which is a beautiful blanket that has all kinds
of patterns and designs on it with different piece... colors of material.
Yeah. Quilts are usually very beautiful.
And you can also get pillow covers here, also made by hand, which go over your
pillow.
That's right. And they would match. And the Amish really, Ryan, they're famous
for these.
Yes, they are.
And you can tell they really do look a little old, but they're very, very
cool-looking and very nice style.
Well, be sure to pick up some Pennsylvania Dutch goodies, like delicious pies.
They are well-known for their cooking as well.
They cook traditionally, but man, they have good food.
That's true.
When you don't spend time on Facebook and driving cars around,
they have more time to make these Dutch goodies or Pennsylvania Dutch goodies
like the delicious pies.
Now the Amish frequently eat them for breakfast.
Now I know I don't get to eat pie for breakfast, which is probably a good thing
because I would eat it all the time.
But the Amish pies are delicious so I can understand why they would eat it for
breakfast.
I used to ask my mom all the time, "Could I please have pie for breakfast?" It
was always "No." I think I might want to travel here.
That's right. It'd be great to stop by the Amish to pick up some of their
beautiful handicrafts, to experience their simple way of life and their
delicious foods.
Well, we're going to keep talking about the Amish tomorrow.
We need to go on over and visit Ken and Bryan in the Chat Room.
Hey, Ken. What are you reading?
Oh. Hey, Bryan.
I'm reading this book I found about Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
Oh, Amish Country.
My friend Ruth took a trip there last year.
Yeah. It sounds like a great place to visit.
Speaking of which, I have an English question for you.
OK, go for it.
This book mentions a walking tour in the city of Lancaster that goes through the
heart of the city.
What is the heart of the city?
Well, that's another way of saying the city's center.
Just like a person's heart is in the center of their body, a city's heart is in
its center.
So is it another way of saying "downtown"?
Sure. They both mean the same thing.
"Downtown" is an unusual word, though.
It is often used as an adjective or an adverb.
For example, Ken, you might go downtown to enjoy the downtown restaurants.
Oh. So "downtown" acts as an adverb when we say: Go downtown.
Right. Good job, Ken.
Boy, English has a lot of ways of referring to the inner city.
Um, Ken, actually the "inner city" is a term with a slightly different meaning.
Really? What does it mean?
Well, many American cities have parts where most of the residents are really
poor and the crime rate is high.
Those parts are often called the inner city.
So even though both downtown and inner city are inside the city, one is rich and
fashionable, the other is poor and rundown?
You're right.
It's strange, but it's often the truth.
I see.
Hey, by the way, I'm taking my son downtown to see a baseball game this weekend.
Would you like to join us?
That sounds like fun, Ken. Thanks.
(Chinese).
(Chinese).
And that's it for today's Language Tips.
Goodbye and take care.
OK, I should mention that Lancaster, Pennsylvania, isn't the only place you'll
find Amish people.
There are large groups of Amish scattered in other parts of America, like Ohio,
Indiana and Colorado.
There are even Amish groups living in Canada.
Friends, if you want to know more about how to live a simpler life,
then join us tomorrow when we talk more about these plain-living people of
southeastern Pennsylvania - the Amish.
I hope all of you have a great day.
Bye-bye.
