I hope you had a great break, everybody.
Welcome back.
Now I know springtime doesn't arrive the same time everywhere in the world.
But according to most calendars in the northern, western world, right now is
when spring officially starts.
So what better time to talk about spring-cleaning our minds on line 5?
Spring-cleaning.
Allow yourself to completely relax, and feel your worries slip away.
Join ... a new group.
Sports teams, dance classes, photography clubs, etc. help you meet new people
and learn new skills.
Go ... to a museum, play or concert.
These events will stretch your mind and feed your soul.
Why not welcome spring this year with a freshly cleaned home and a renewed mind
and body!
OK. So you can clean your mind by treating yourself to a spa or maybe make a spa
at home.
You can also allow yourself to completely relax whether you're in your own spa
at home or whether you go out to one, and feel your worries just slip away.
I like that, to slip away.
Allow your worries to slip away.
When you slip something, that means it slides.
It goes smoothly without problems.
So if you want to think about slipping, maybe the floor is wet, and it goes
smoothly.
You slide across it.
That's kind of what this means.
When your worries slip away, that means they disappear.
Yeah. And they probably go away very slowly, and you just stop worrying about
anything and don't even think about things that cause you to worry.
This really sounds like a great way to relax.
I think I should do this when I get home.
Yeah, me too.
I think this is a great tip to spring-clean my emotions.
I need to just let my worries and my troubles just slip away.
That's right. Now you can also Join.
We see "join a new group." Now what are we talking about here?
Well, a group, we're talking about a larger amount of people, so multiple
people.
But what kind of group?
There're all kinds of groups.
Right. So here we see sports teams, dance classes, photography clubs, etc.
Those are certain groups that you can join.
Which would you join?
Ooh, actually, I think I would join a photography club.
I love learning about how to take pictures and make better photography skills.
That's right. I do know you enjoy taking pictures.
You are quite a photographer.
Well, thank you.
What about you? Which one would you join?
I would join the dance class.
I thought you'd say that.
Kaylah loves to dance.
OK. Well, these kinds of clubs and classes and teams can help you meet new
people and learn new skills.
Now what I think is fun about meeting new people... it's always fun to meet
someone new and to make a new friend,
but especially when you join a group that you are interested in what they do.
If you join something like a dance class... I love dancing, I would join a dance
class.
Well, who else would be in that class?
People who enjoy the same things.
Exactly. So you will get to meet people that have the same interests as you, and
you might make some really good friends.
Yeah. That's right.
You know, it's good when you're meeting... when you're making friends... your
friends and you have something in common.
Well, if you meet them in a class or you're doing something you both love, you
automatically have something to talk about.
Sometimes it's hard to meet people we get along with, so find a group that does
something you enjoy as well.
Yeah. Friends, think of something that you would like to improve your skills on
or maybe something you are just curious or interested in, and go out and join a
group.
Meet some new people and have fun.
That's right. You can also join an English group because all of you are doing so
well with your studying English.
That's right, friends. You can improve your English and meet new friends at the
same time.
OK. What's our next tip?
Go.
Go? OK, go where?
Go... to a museum, a play or a concert.
OK. So you can just go.
Get out of your house.
See a museum; maybe enjoy some art or enjoy some history at a museum.
Or maybe you can go to a play, see someone act.
Or what about a concert?
Well, a concert... Now all of these are things I enjoy doing, Ryan.
I would go to all three of these.
But a concert... A "concert" is a performance of music by one or more of
musicians or singer.
So maybe you're a big fan of a certain artist... I like Josh Groban. I would go
to a Josh Groban concert.
So I would go watch him perform and sing.
That's right.
You can go see some famous people that play music or sing.
Watch them play their music and enjoy it with a lot of other people.
Maybe... I know Korean pop is really popular right now.
Maybe find a Korean pop concert.
Or if you like classical music, you can go see a large choir or an orchestra
perform.
That is also called a concert.
But go! Get out, do something.
These events will stretch your mind and feed your soul because it brings
something new and educational.
That's right. This is a great way to get out of your house and also a great way
to make you feel better.
Now why not welcome spring this year with a freshly cleaned home and a renewed
mind and body.
I like this. "Why not." Why not welcome spring.
Now this phrase at the beginning is kind of a question.
It's helping you, but it's more asking you to think.
Can you think of any reason why spring should not come with a clean home?
I can't. I think it's good to clean your home and to have a renewed mind and
body.
That's right.
Now if something is "renewed," that means it has increased life, maybe it will
last longer.
That's right. And we want it to last longer.
And we definitely want our mind and body to last a long time.
So keep it renewed, keep it healthy.
You see the "R-E," refreshing that.
It's... it's once again with those... that uh... prefix.
You know, we want to bring things back, make them fresh again.
Exactly. Your mind and your body will feel better.
And also, now you can also clean your home.
Your home will be cleaner as well.
And so we've got these wonderful tips for you to get outside, see nature, meet
new people and also reconnect with ones that you already love.
OK. Ryan, what do you want to do?
What do you think you'll do this spring to help you refresh and renew?
Oh, you know me.
I want to get outside and enjoy a new adventure.
Oh. Well, maybe you can take your camera and try some photography as well.
Maybe join a class and meet new friends.
I'm going to try to do as many of these as I can.
Maybe find some loved ones, go out in nature, bring my camera.
You can dance.
We'll try to do it all together.
OK. Well, I hope that, our friends, you too can renew and refresh your mind and
body this spring.
OK. We'll see you next time.
Right now let's visit the Chat Room.
So now Jim has this job opportunity in London, a city he's always wanted to go
to.
He's a little nervous, though.
I told him he shouldn't let this opportunity slip away.
I agree. It sounds like this job is perfect for Jim.
Yes, it is. But he has to act fast or they'll offer the job to someone else.
Right. Hey, Bryan, you said he shouldn't let the opportunity slip away.
What does that mean exactly?
Well, "slip away" means more or less the same as go away.
So if the opportunity slips away, it's no longer available.
Is it always a bad thing when something slips away?
Not necessarily.
If you talk about your worries slipping away, that means they're slowly fading
until you don't think about them anymore.
So when your worries slip away, that's actually a good thing?
Oh, yes.
You can also talk about a person's slipping away from a place, which means they
leave a place.
Could I say later this afternoon I'm going to slip away from the library?
You could, Ken.
But slipping away from a place usually implies you don't want to be there.
Oh. Then that wouldn't be right.
I like being here in the library.
Hey, Bryan, I've heard of criminals slipping away from the police.
Is that the same meaning?
Yes. You got it.
That means they escaped from the police.
What about "slipping out"? Could I say she slipped out of the party?
Sure. The meaning is basically the same as slip away, although "slip out"
implies that you leave without being noticed.
Oh. Well, let me know if you're ever thinking of slipping out of the library.
Don't worry, Ken.
That won't happen.
Good. Well, keep me posted on Jim.
Hope he doesn't let that job slip away.
OK, will do.
(Chinese).
Hi, everyone. I'm Michelle.
(Chinese).
And that concludes our Language Tips today.
I'll see you soon. Bye-bye.
So as the weather warms up and you feel the urge to clean things in and around
your house, I say go for it.
But don't just stop there.
It's good to dive into spring with refreshed emotions and a renewed mind too.
