I'm very excited to be here talking about a very interesting person.
Hmm. OK, we'll find out who that is in a moment.
America has many stars, many music stars, many movie stars and sports stars.
But one athlete stands out in the Asian star community.
Oh, I know who this is.
I'm very excited.
We're talking about Jeremy Lin.
Oh. OK, Kaylah, I didn't know you were a sports fan.
Well, I enjoy watching games sometimes, but I wouldn't say I'm a big sports fan.
OK. Well, then how do you know who Jeremy Lin is?
Well, you know, I may not be a sports fan, but I am definitely a Jeremy Lin fan.
Really! So what makes him so special?
Well, he's... he's tall and handsome and athletic and smart.
But most of all, he's humble, kind and strong in his faith.
Kaylah, I'm tall, I'm... I'm handsome, I'm somewhat athletic and smart and kind,
and I'm very, very humble.
Are you my fan too?
Um... well, no.
What?
Well, Jeremy Lin is, you know, in a different league.
Oh... you mean the NBA.
Yes, that and...
And what?
Well... well, let's find out what makes him so special starting on page 18.
Jeremy Lin.
Chasing dreams and finding joy.
Among professional basketball players, Jeremy Lin's background is not typical.
He graduated from Harvard University, which sends few players to the NBA, and he
is the only Chinese-American NBA player.
But when you watch him on the court, there is no doubt that he belongs there.
He moves with speed and grace that demonstrate years of faithful practice, which
is fueled by a love for basketball.
Well, friends, today we are talking about Jeremy Lin.
I'm very excited to be talking about this really remarkable and incredible young
man.
Yes. This really does look like an exciting article right now, Kaylah, all about
Jeremy Lin.
OK, so let's start off finding out who he is.
Well, Jeremy Lin, we all know, is a professional basketball player for the NBA.
Today we're talking about his story about chasing dreams and how he found joy in
the journey.
OK. Now among professional basketball players, Jeremy Lin's background is not
typical.
Now we see the word "among" here - among professional basketball players.
Now that means in the group of or around... including all the professional
basketball players, his story is not typical.
Right. His background or his story is not typical.
And Kaylah, I have to say I really enjoy watching basketball, but I don't often
know the story of many of the players.
So this should be interesting.
This should be interesting.
Jeremy has a very interesting background from the time he was young all the way
up to entering the NBA.
And so we get to learn about his story and he got there.
But I think really what separates him, his most notable for right now in the NBA
is where he graduated from.
That's true.
He graduated from Harvard University, a great school, and that school sends few
players to the NBA.
That's right. Harvard is considered one of the best schools in the United
States.
So it's impressive that he... someone so smart is also so talented athletically.
He's a very gifted person.
Yeah. But that school only sends few players to the NBA, not very many, but
Jeremy Lin is the only Chinese-American NBA player.
That is really cool.
We have a couple of players that have come from other countries into the United
States to play NBA.
But Jeremy Lin is the first American... Chinese-American born in the United
States, raised in the United States now playing for the NBA.
Right. So now here in the NBA - the National Basketball Association - in
America, he's now a very unique player.
That's right. "NBA," as we said, is National Basketball Association is the
highest level of basketball play in the world, really.
The NBA is considered the best league or group to be in.
Right. So he really must be a very good player.
And I'm very interested in getting to know his story a little bit more.
That's right.
It says: When you watch him on the court, there's no doubt that he belongs
there.
So even though he was a smart student - went to Harvard - he also belongs on
this basketball court.
Right. A "court" is talking about the area on the ground where you play certain
sports.
For example, tennis. You can play tennis on a tennis court.
But you can also play basketball on a basketball court.
That's right. Or even volleyball has its own court, or badminton.
There's all different sports that have a court.
It's just an area drawn on the ground.
Well, we've all known what a basketball court looks like because I'm sure all of
our friends out there have played or at least watched a basketball game.
Exactly. Now he's very natural on the basketball court.
He looks like he belongs there, and he moves with speed and grace that
demonstrate years of faithful practice.
That is impressive.
"He moves with speed." We know that's how fast he is going.
And "with grace." That means he's very smooth.
He doesn't trip up or he just moves very quickly and very beautifully down the
court as he plays, which shows that he's been practicing for a long time.
Yeah. It demonstrates or shows years of faithful practice.
Now the word "faithful" here means loyal, you've been willing to do something
for a long time.
That's right. He faithfully gets out there.
He continuously doesn't stop, keeps practicing to make his game better, which is
how he ends up in the NBA.
But Ryan, he's got a fascinating story.
We're going to look at it.
But today I would like to watch our skit first.
Basketball is really great.
I love the NBA.
I know you do, but put your basketball away.
It's time for you to do your homework.
Oh, not now, Mom.
I have to practice basketball.
When I grow up, I want to be just like Jeremy Lin.
You want to be like Jeremy?
Yes. He is the only Chinese-American in the NBA.
He moves with speed and grace.
Well, if you want to be like Jeremy Lin, you'll do your homework.
Huh?
Yeah. Jeremy is a professional basketball player, but his background isn't
typical.
Did you know he went to Harvard?
Harvard? So he did his homework?
Of course. And he spent much of his time playing basketball too.
His father and his older brother taught him how to play.
Oh, his family taught him basketball?
Yes. But they taught him more than that.
They also taught him about conduct toward other players.
Conduct?
Yes. His parents taught him that character was more important than playing well.
Well, I want to be just like Jeremy Lin, so will you teach me more about
character?
Yes, but after you do your homework.
