Hello, everybody.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
Thanks for joining us today.
Kaylah, I know that today's topic is really special for you.
Yes. I love talking about Jeremy Lin.
I'm a big fan, so thank you for having me, Steve.
Yeah. Jeremy Lin is indeed a wonderful basketball player.
Yes, wonderful.
He's a smart Harvard graduate.
Really smart.
He's a loyal supporter of his fans.
So loyal!
He's a man who loves his family.
Loves them so much.
Kaylah, what are you doing?
Well, I am just agreeing with you.
Why do you keep interrupting me?
I'm excited to talk about Jeremy Lin some more.
So you are a big fan, aren't you?
Yes.
Well, then can you tell me his jersey number?
Number seven.
Can you tell me how tall he is?
Six foot three inches.
Uh... OK, here's a hard one.
What is his birthday?
Easy! August 23, 1988.
See? I told you I was a fan.
Wow! Yes, you are.
How do you know so much about him?
The Internet.
Oh, right.
But if he wasn't such an amazing basketball player, you wouldn't know who he is,
would you?
Probably not.
So let's learn about his journey to the NBA starting on page 19, Rise of a Star.
(Music).
Jeremy Lin.
Rise of a Star.
In high school, Lin dreamed of playing in the NBA but did not really expect to
do so.
When he applied for college, he was not offered a single sports scholarship.
However, after his admission to Harvard, he was offered a place on its college
basketball team.
During Lin's time at Harvard, his basketball career began to take off.
He scored 1,482 points, making him one of the highest scorers in Ivy League
history.
Eventually, the recognition he received led him to suspect that his NBA dream
could come true.
Friends, it's exciting to be talking about someone we can all admire.
Jeremy Lin is an incredible basketball player as well as a very smart student
and devoted to his family as well.
Yeah. We've seen how he is a great person on the court, he is also a good person
in life thanks to the support of his family.
But his support of his family was what pushed him to become what he... is today.
So we're talking about this Rise of a Star.
Now Ryan, we're not talking about a star as in the night sky.
No, of course not.
We're talking about someone who is famous.
And he is very famous!
We saw the he is the first Chinese-American basketball player in the NBA.
That's right. But this is the "rise of a star," so this is how he became the
star that he is.
It's about him coming up, his journey to becoming an NBA basketball player.
Well, we saw that it started when he was five when he learned the game but
continued.
Right. Now in high school, he dreamed of playing in the NBA but did not really
expect to do so.
I think most high school boys, I know my friends that played basketball in high
school always dreamed of playing for the NBA.
So I imagine most young boys do dream of playing in the NBA, but he never
thought he really would.
Yeah. And like most boys, we probably didn't expect to make it into like the NBA
or the MLB for baseball.
But here we see Jeremy Lin he eventually did do that.
In fact, when he applied for college, he was not offered a single sports
scholarship.
Now most players that go on to play for the NBA attend college on a sports
scholarship.
That means the school, the government gives them money to play basketball or
whatever sport at their school.
Right. A scholarship is money given to a student so that they can attend the
school.
And of course, most schools you would want them to offer you a sports
scholarship so that you could become, hopefully, a professional sports player.
Now most often if you're not offered a sports scholarship, that means you've not
been offered a place on the team right away.
So it's best if you want to play the sport to be going in as an established
player.
However, this was not what happened for Jeremy.
That's right, yeah.
We see uh... after his admission to Harvard, he was offered a place on its
college basketball team.
Now Ryan, that's rare to be attending school and then just try out for the team.
But he made the team and had no sports scholarships at all.
Exactly. And that was after his "admission," which is when a school agrees to
let you come and join that school.
Now what's interesting about this, Kaylah, is that he didn't receive any
scholarships.
Usually if you are a good player, you don't... or you would receive a
scholarship.
But they still let him on their team.
That's right. He started to play for them.
And during his time at Harvard, his basketball career began to just take off.
Exactly. And if something "takes off," OK, we've talked about airplanes taking
off when they lift into the sky, this is a little bit different.
This means that you begin to become successful very quickly.
That's right. And it is kind of like an airplane take off when you think about
it.
You become successful very quickly just as an airplane begins to go into the air
very quickly, so it rises into the sky.
And that's what you are doing.
If your career takes off, you are quickly going up in the ranks.
Yes. And we see how he did that.
He scored 1,482 points, making him one of the highest scorers in Ivy League
history.
That is a lot of points.
That is so many points.
But this was in Ivy League history he set this record.
Now the "Ivy League" refers to a group of colleges and universities in the
United States that are thought to be the highest level of education, so.
There are quite a few: Dartmouth and Harvard and... there's a whole list of them
that are considered very high academics that you need to get into.
Yeah. Many people like those schools and so that makes it even more impressive.
I am still amazed that he scored 1,482 points.
I think that is a lot.
Well, Ryan, that statistic, that impressive score is actually what made him
think he could receive recognition from the NBA and maybe his dream could become
true.
Right. And he did get a lot of recognition for being such a good player in such
good schools,
so he began to suspect or began to think maybe he could join the NBA.
All right, now let's go to the Chat Room.
Hi, Ken.
Hey, Bryan. I just picked up this flyer at the front door.
So the library is offering a scholarship for local high school students?
That's right.
We are giving five students $1,000 each in financial aid for college.
That's great.
Hey, by the way, is there a difference between financial aid and a scholarship?
Great question, Ken.
Hey, let's see what Doris has to say about this.
"Financial aid" refers to the money a student receives while paying for college.
The money can be in the form of loans, which have to be paid back, or grants and
scholarships which do not.
Grants come from the government and are always need-based.
This means they are given to students who have less money and thus need more
help.
Scholarships come from either the universities themselves or other
organizations.
I see. So are scholarships need-based?
Some are needs-based, but others are merit-based, which means they're given on
the basis of grades or other abilities.
So this scholarship the library is offering, is it merit-based or need-based?
It's merit-based.
We determine who gets it by looking at their grades.
Applicants also have to write an essay about their favorite books.
What about sports or music scholarships?
Are they merit-based or need-based?
Those are generally a type of merit-based scholarship based on a student's
performance in either sports or music.
I see. Well, thanks for the explanation.
No problem, Ken.
By the way, do you know anyone who might be interested in this scholarship?
Yes, my nephew is graduating this year and plans to start college in the fall.
I'm sure he could use a little extra money.
Great. You should tell him to apply.
Thanks. I will.
