So Jeremy Lin attended one of the best schools in the United States without a
sports scholarship,
but soon proved just how valuable he was on a basketball court, which made him
think that his dreams just might come true.
Now friends, I hope this is an encouragement to you to keep trying, to keep
going after your dreams because just like Jeremy,
you never know what the future may hold.
Well, join us to hear more of his story on page 20 at the top on line one.
Jeremy Lin.
When he first graduated, no professional teams offered Lin a contract, but he
was invited to play in the NBA Summer League.
He played well and ended up eagerly signing a contract with the Golden State
Warriors.
Life in the NBA.
At first, playing in professional games filled Lin with excitement.
He treasured opportunities to meet players he had been watching on TV for years.
He was thrilled by the opportunities he had to ride in private planes and give
interviews.
(Music).
To understand how Jeremy Lin got into the NBA, we need to understand how you end
up in the NBA in the first place.
Usually you do need to graduate from university, and then you are asked to join
an NBA team to sign a contract.
But that's not what happened for Jeremy.
That's right. When first he... when he first graduated, there were no
professional teams who offered him a contract.
Usually that would happen pretty quickly when you graduate.
That's right. Especially considering just how amazing a player he is, he would
think he would have a contract right away.
But he was not offered a contract, but that wasn't the end.
He was invited to play in the NBA Summer League, which is a group that meets
during the summer, during the off-season, not during the major games,
and they play together in hopes of catching the attention and getting asked to
join one of the NBA teams.
Right. This is a "league," which is a group of teams that play against each
other usually in a game.
And they are trying to get the attention of the NBA to get them into the real
games.
He played well.
So during the summer he played very well and ended up eagerly signing a contract
with the Golden State Warriors.
Oh, I can imagine that he would be very eager, Kaylah, to sign a contract.
Now the word "eagerly" here is referring to doing something being very excited,
very happy to do it.
That's right, and he would be!
He played in the NBA Summer League, he was excited when they offered him a
contract.
That's the agreement that he will play for their team and they will pay him to
be a Golden State Warrior.
And that's very exciting.
He's going to tell us a little bit about... some more actually about his life in
the NBA.
Yeah. Let's visit Teacher Simon Stopps for another interview.
Jeremy, we're so glad to have you back here again.
Tell me, did you ever imagine you would have been so successful?
Growing up, I always dreamed about playing in the NBA.
And it was just something I'd hope for as a kid just watching the NBA.
But I wouldn't say it became a reality until maybe my senior year in college.
That's when I began to think I had a chance.
And so when I finally made it, I just remember it was a long journey of the long
path, and I was just very, very thankful that I was finally here.
How do you deal with the pressure of that success?
At the beginning of the season I really struggled with that, just with a lot of
the media and the attention and the fans.
But once I learned to let go of... of the expectations of others and to start
playing for God rather than other people and rather for myself,
that's when I began to really enjoy the game again and to have that passion come
back.
Jeremy, who do you turn to when you need support or advice?
Well, I'm very close to my family and so I always talk to my family about, you
know, different stuggles, things I'm going through.
And also because I play for the Warriors, I moved to my hometown.
I go to my home church and so I have my small group and I have my pastor who
disciples me as well and my close friends who all live in the area.

He gets to stay near his family, and as he said, his small group and his pastor
at church for support.
Yeah. It's great that he has so much support from so many people and that he is
still near home.
And of course, he has to deal with a lot of media attention, but it's great that
he has so many people caring about him.
That's right.
He definitely has a lot of media attention.
But that is all just part of life in the NBA.
Now we're going to talk about his life in the NBA.
At first, things were a little different.
Right. Playing in professional games filled Jeremy Lin with a lot of excitement.
And I can imagine. I would be excited too.
What an experience to be playing on a professional court!
He said he treasured opportunities to meet players he had been watching on TV
for years.
Now this would be so exciting to be able to meet some of maybe your... even
basketball heros, your favorite players and to be on the same court as them.
What an awesome experience.
Yes, he would definitely treasure that.
That means you... greatly enjoy it and remember it.
And of course, if you... before he was a basketball player, he was a basketball
fan.
And so it was really a great chance for him to see his favorite players.
That's right.
He was thrilled by the opportunities he had to ride in the private planes and
give interviews.
So if he was "thrilled," what does that mean?
Well, if you're "thrilled," it means you are extremely happy, you really enjoy
it.
A child might be thrilled by a chance to go to a theme park, for example.
That's right, you could be thrilled.
And as an adult playing in the NBA for the first time, it would be a thrill to
ride on a private plane.
Now a lot of professional basketball and all sports teams travel by private
airplanes so that they're not with all the rest of us who would be so excited to
see them.
They get their own airplane.
And that, Ryan, I can't... I can't even imagine being on a private airplane.
What a cool experience!
Yes. Now friends, he gets a lot of great opportunities.
And an "opportunity" is a chance to do something, typically a chance to do
something great.
And like Kaylah said, a chance to ride on a private plane and to give
interviews? Oh, that's awesome!
To be... for someone to want to hear what you have to say is really a blessing
and very exciting when people care what you think.
So for Jeremy, when he first joined the NBA, giving interviews was a wonderful
experience.
And I hope his Studio Classroom interview was a good experience too.
Yeah. These are some great opportunities, plane rides and interviews.

But after his admission, Harvard did offer him a place on their team.
Oh, that's good. Did he play well?
Oh, yes.
And his basketball career began to take off.
He was one of the highest scorers in Ivy League history.
And his NBA dreams came true.
Yes, but not right away.
When he first graduated, no professional teams offered him a contract.
What? No contract?
No contract.
So he played in the NBA Summer League.
He played very well.
And then?
And then he ended up signing a contract with the Golden State Warriors.
Hooray! He did it!
Yes.
