Hello, everybody.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
Thanks for joining us.
My name is Steve.
And my name is Kaylah.
And I'm really excited to be talking about Jeremy, Jeremy, Jeremy.
Kaylah, please calm down.
I'm just so excited. We're getting to my favorite part in Jeremy Lin's story.
Well, I thought you just liked him because he was a basketball player and that
he was cute.
Well, he is both of those.
But I respect him as a person.
What do you mean?
As I said a few days ago, he is humble, kind and strong in his faith.
I really respect that in a person.
So what do you think made him this way?
Well, it isn't easy being a star.
True.
And nobody is perfect.
True.
And Jeremy Lin knows that.
So he doesn't rely just on himself.
Well, that does make him a very special person, you're right.
Do you want to know how he got to where he is and for whom he relies on?
I do.
Well, then let's pick up our reading on page 20 line 12.
(Music).
Jeremy Lin.
But slowly, the excitement wore off and was replaced by anxiety.
Lin was afraid of playing badly and disappointing his fans.
He constantly compared himself to other players and gave himself no time to rest
up.
For the first time in his life, he no longer enjoyed playing basketball.
After a few very difficult months, Lin turned to his Christian faith to help
transform his attitude.
Well, friends, it would be a thrill to be living out your dream and playing in
the NBA experiencing all the wonderful things that Jeremy got to experience.
But excitement doesn't last forever.
That's right, Jeremy was very excited at first in the NBA.
But slowly, that wore off and was instead replaced with anxiety.
Hmm. That's not good.
No.
For going from excitement, and when something wears off, that means it goes
away.
If you think about maybe your shoes and you're walking on the ground, the bottom
gets worn off because you walk so much.
It slowly gets shorter or smaller.
Now his excitement would've gotten smaller along the way and was unfortunately
replaced by anxiety.
Yeah. And "anxiety" means fear or worry.
So instead of being excited about being in the NBA, he was worrying; he had a
lot of fear.
That's... that's not good because Lin was afraid of playing badly and
disappointing his fans.
Now Ryan, I... this is not a good thing to be experiencing but I can understand
why he might feel this way.
If you have a lot of people counting on you, a lot of people who look up to you
and expect something from you and you... you don't want to let them down.
Right. Yeah, many people might be excited to become famous and become popular,
but they often don't think about what it could be like when they have people
that they might be disappointing or be letting down.
Hmm, that's right.
It's... it would definitely be a challenge.
He consistently compared himself to other players and gave himself no time to
rest.
So this is not good.
When you are in any situation, you should not be comparing yourself to the
people around you.
You should be doing your best, working for your best.
When you are doing testing or grading, you need to be working for your best
grade, your best result, and not worry about the people around you.
And that's what Jeremy was having problems with on the basketball court.
Right. He stopped enjoying the game just for himself and he began worrying about
himself:
What other people were thinking about him and comparing himself to the other
players, and he didn't have time to rest up.
And when you "rest up," that means you take time to relax, to take a break, to,
in a sense, recharge so that he could become stronger again.
Yeah, regain your strength.
So you need to rest; and we can use the phrase "rest up" only referring to
taking time off to get more strength, not just sleeping.
That's right.
He needed to eat properly and drink properly and sleep enough and take some time
off of athletics but was so concerned that he wasn't allowing himself to do
that.
Yeah. You could use the word "relax." He didn't have time to relax.
Now for the first time in his life, he no longer enjoyed playing basketball.
What an awful realization that you've made his career choice, you're under a
contract, you are working, doing what you love to do,
and then all of this stress happens and you don't even enjoy it anymore.
Oh. That would just be awful.
Yeah, it's so sad to see that instead of enjoying the game, he was just worrying
about it.
And after a few very difficult months, he then turned to his Christian faith to
help them transform his attitude.
Now that is such a wise thing.
Jeremy Lin is a smart person, very smart academically.
He's a good athlete.
But he's very strong in his faith.
He has a good sense of his Christian faith.
And when he was stressed and concerned, he knew he had nowhere to go except back
to God.
And that's exactly what he did.
Yeah. Kaylah, now this is so great to see that he was dealing with all this
worry but then turned to Christianity.
And that transformed his attitude.
What does it mean to transform?
That means it completely changed it, turned him around and he found the joy and
the love and passion of basketball again.
Well, I think Jeremy is a fun guy and I think he would enjoy this skit about
him.
Whew. I practice basketball because I want to be just like...
Jeremy Lin.
I know. I know.
Mom, tell me more about Jeremy.
Was he excited to play with the NBA?
Of course! It filled him with excitement.
He treasured opportunities to meet other players.
Yeah. That's cool.
He was thrilled by opportunities to ride in private planes and give interviews.
Oh, that is so cool!
Yes. But slowly, the excitement wore off.
It was replaced by anxiety.
Anxiety? Why?
He was afraid of disappointing his fans.
He compared himself to others, and he had no time to rest up.
Oh, no. Poor Jeremy.
For the first time in his life, he no longer enjoyed basketball.
That is sad.
Then what happened?
Well, then he turned to his Christian faith.
And that transformed his attitude.
Transformed his attitude? How?
Well, he had been self-centered.
But after that, he practiced hard and played the game to please God, not to
become famous.
And that helped him?
Yes. Now he plays with joy and gratitude.
And I'm going to play with joy and gratitude too because I want to be just
like...
Jeremy Lin.
I know. Iknow.
