Hi, everybody.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
Thanks for joining us today.
And it's good to see you again, Ryan.
You too, Steve.
OK, excuse me for a minute, everyone.
Whoa, Ryan, where are you going?
Oh. It's OK. I just need to use the restroom really fast.
Oh. Wait, wait, wait, wait.
Are you sure it's safe?
Well, of course it's safe. It's just a bathroom.
A-ha! My friend, you need to be informed on the dangers of using a restroom.
I think I'll be fine. Besides, I have to go...
Whoa, Ryan, Ryan, wait. Wait, wait.
Public restrooms can have over 40,000 germs per square inch.
So be sure you wash your hands, OK?
Oh, I always wash my hands.
And... and wait, wait.
And when you dry them, you might want to use a paper towel instead of a hand
dryer since that could increase the amount of bacteria.
Oh... well, that's nice. But really, Steve, that doesn't sound very dangerous.
I'll be fine.
Wait, wait, wait, Ryan, wait.
There's still so much I have to tell you.
Let's see what a dangerous place the bathroom can be on page 22 in our Studio
Classroom magazine.
Bath Safety.
Your bathroom can be a dangerous place.
Accidents can occur anywhere around your home.
But your bathroom is one of the most dangerous rooms in the house.
Some of the most common dangers include:
Electricity.
Keep everything electric away from bath water, sinks and toilets.
Put away anything electric after use.
Don't use any kind of electric appliance while standing in water or even on a
wet floor.
Never touch an electric appliance with wet hands.
Dry your hands completely first.
Water.
Never leave young children alone in the bathroom.
Hello, friends.
Thank you so much for joining us here in the studio.
My name is Ryan.
And my name is Kaylah.
And Ryan, I have a question for you.
We're talking about SAFETY today, what do you think is the most dangerous room
in your house?
Ooh. OK. I would have to guess, Kaylah, that it would be the kitchen.
Hmm, the kitchen.
Why would you say the kitchen?
Well, there are many knives and things in there that can be hot, I think it
could be very dangerous.
Well, that is a good guess.
A kitchen can be a very dangerous room.
But today we're talking about the dangers in your bathroom.
Yeah. Now this is very surprising.
The bathroom can be a dangerous place.
And it's usually a place you would not think of as being dangerous.
That's right. We think we get clean there, we brush our teeth, we take a bath.
But there are a lot of dangers that can happen in this room.
Unfortunately, a lot of accidents occur in your house, anywhere in your home,
really.
Yeah. And an "accident" is really bad.
An accident is referring to something that is not expected.
You didn't mean for it to happen.
If you have an accident, it usually means you hurt yourself.
That's right. Something bad has happened, and we're talking about the dangers in
your home.
Now accidents are problems, something bad that has happened that you did not
mean to happen.
But you know, a lot of people don't think a bathroom can be one of the most
dangerous rooms in the house.
Yeah. And like you asked me before, I thought it would have been the kitchen.
You can have many accidents in a kitchen or in a bedroom or living room or many
other rooms in your house.
So it's surprising that the bathroom can be one of the most dangerous rooms in
the house.
Well, some of the most dangerous things in your home, the common dangers in your
house are in your bathroom.
So let's talk about what those are.
The first one is Electricity.
OK. "Electricity" is referring to anything that uses power or energy to run.
So in a bathroom, maybe you have a hair dryer to dry your hair, or a curling
iron.
Or maybe you have an electric razor that you shave your face or legs with.
Exactly. And now there are many of these in the bathroom.
Of course, you can find other electric items in your house, but they are a
little bit more dangerous in your bathroom.
So let's learn how we can avoid the danger.
Well, what makes them dangerous?
Usually the water.
It says, "Keep everything electric away from bath water, sinks and toilets." We
know that electricity and water do not go well together.
That's a very dangerous combination.
So keep all of your electric appliances away from the water.
Yes. If you just get out of a shower and you want to dry your hair with a blow
dryer, make sure you are already dried off first before you plug it in.
Also, never plug in an electric outlet across a room that crosses over the
toilet or a sink full of water.
That is just asking for some trouble.
Exactly. Now whenever you're done with these electric items, make sure you put
them away when you are done.
But Kaylah, we also see you shouldn't use an electric appliance over water like
you said.
What is an appliance?
Well, the "appliance" is the thing that you are using.
The appliance is a device that is often electric - here we see the word
"electric" - that you use in your house.
So in your bathroom, you may have a blow dryer.
In your kitchen, maybe you have a mixer.
Or in your living room, you could have a television.
OK. Now Kaylah, actually I have been guilty of being a little bit dangerous in
my bathroom before when I use an electric razor.
Sometimes I would plug it in over the sink.
So I'll try to remember not to do that anymore.
And it says here not even just over the sink, Ryan, it says not... to not use it
while you are standing in water or even if the floor is wet.
I know in my bathroom, the floor gets really wet after I shower.
So it's important to not dry your hair standing on a wet floor using
electricity.
Yes. And never touch those electric appliances with your wet hands.
Make sure you dry your hands completely before you touch them.
OK. So electricity and water are not a good combination.
But there are also dangers with water in your bathroom.
First, you should never leave a child alone in the bathroom.
That's a very dangerous situation.
And we're going to talk about why that is dangerous and what you can do to avoid
the dangers for children in the bathroom after the break.
But I want to see today's skit.
Excuse me, sir. Where is the bathroom?
You can't use the bathroom.
Why not?
It's one of the most dangerous rooms in the house.
But... I really have to go.
But accidents occur in the bathroom.
There is electricity in there.
So? There is electricity in every room.
True. But the bathroom also has bathtubs, sinks and toilets.
So?
And electricity and water spell D-A-N-G-E-R, danger!
Yes. But... I really have to go.
OK, OK. But do you promise not to use electrical appliances around water and to
dry your hands completely first?
Yes, yes... I promise.
Good. And watch your step. It's slippery in there.
Slippery?
Yes. Use the non-slip mats around the tub and toilet.
OK, OK, I'll do that.
And hold onto the safety bars that I installed.
OK, OK, I will.
Children will drown in only a few inches of water.
Can you swim?
Yes, yes. I'm a good swimmer.
Excellent!
Now once inside, you'll see brightly colored and interesting things.
Oh, I'm so curious.
Those are cleaning products and medicines.
Do not eat or drink them.
Oh, oops. OK.
Luckily, they're kept in a safe place.
Uh, sir, I really have to go... now!
OK. Well, uh, good luck in there.
Thanks. OK, I'm going...
What's wrong?
There's no toilet paper.
Here you go.
Thanks.
Close thedoor.
