Hi, everybody.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
Thanks for joining us.
Kaylah, great to see you again today.
We have an interesting article, don't we?
That's right, Steve. We have a wonderful article about HISTORY.
OK. Many mysteries lie deep in the tombs of ancient kings around the world.
In Rome, we look through the tombs below the city.
In England, for example, we learn stories in the tombs beneath church floors.
But the most famous tombs in the world are the tombs of ancient Egypt, the
pyramids.
OK. But the pyramids are not the only tombs in Egypt, right?
Right. Near the pyramids is the Valley of the Kings, a large area where ancient
kings were buried during... with a lot of ceremonial respect.
OK. Ancient Egypt left many buildings and tombs full of history and artifacts.
But through the years, tomb raiders or thieves took what they wanted because of
greed.
But in 1922, a tomb was found, untouched, that made a minor king the most famous
Egyptian king in history.
Now, do you know who that is, Steve?
I sure do.
It's the one and only boy king - King Tutankhamun.
Well, when his tomb was opened, historians found a wealth of treasures and
history.
It certainly was an amazing tomb that it not been opened in 3,000 years.
Wow! 3,000 years is a really long time!
Friends, let's find out together how they found King Tut's tomb and what was in
it starting on page 34.
(Music).
King Tut's Tomb.
Finding this Egyptian king changed history.
Ninety years ago this year a man named Howard Carter made a great find.
But he didn't discover an unknown people group or a new plant.
He found the resting place of a king.
People had seen signs of King Tutankhamun's tomb but had never found it.
Eventually, Carter's crew discovered a set of steps that led down to some
underground rooms.
There Carter found the king's body and many of his treasures.
The discovery has made King Tutankhamun, Tut for short, one of the
better-remembered kings of Egypt.
Well, we are talking about King Tut's Tomb.
Now to understand this, we need to know what a tomb is.
Right. A "tomb" is a place where people are buried after they die.
So what makes it different than a grave?
Well, a grave is usually in the ground.
A tomb can sometimes be a larger room that the person is put in.
That's right. A grave is just for the body.
A tomb has a lot of space, and so you put other things in it as well.
Well, King Tut's tomb is the most famous in history.
Finding this Egyptian king completely changed Egyptian history for us.
Right. King Tut was an Egyptian king, which means he was a king in Egypt.
Well, ninety years ago this... this year a man named Howard Carter made a great
find.
That's right. He found something.
But he didn't discover an unknown people group or a new plant.
He found the resting place of a king.
And a resting place is another way of saying where he was buried.
Yeah, we had actually... or he had found the tomb of King Tut.
Now people had seen signs of this King Tutankhamun's tomb but had never actually
found it.
That's right.
King Tut is just a shortened form of the name King Tutankhamun.
Well, eventually, Carter's crew discovered a set of steps that led down to some
underground rooms.
So they have been digging and were trying to find things but eventually found
this.
Right. And "eventually" here means at the end after a long time.
So they were looking for a while and finally in the end, they found these
underground rooms.
So this is very cool, the way the tomb is laid out.
You go down a set of staircases, and then there is a hallway.
And there are rooms down there.
And that was where King Tut was buried.
That is his tomb.
There Carter not only found the king's body but also found many of his
treasures.
Right. Since in a tomb you not only put a body, you also put other things.
In this case, they found his treasures.
Those are things that he collected that are very valuable.
Now in Egyptian history, the ancient kings were buried with all kinds of amazing
art.
Now King Tut's tomb was no... no different.
There were amazing things in there.
Yeah, there were.
And you can actually see pictures of some of the passages in the tomb if you
look on page 35 of your Studio Classroom magazine.
Well, the discovery has made King Tutankhamun, Tut for short, one of the
best-remembered kings of Egypt.
Now he wasn't famous until they did find his tomb.
That was a wonderful discovery.
Right. The "discovery" is referring to something that you find for the first
time.
Now that is also our Grammar on the Go sentence.
So let's visit Liz, and then we'll go to the Chat Room.
Hello, friends.
How are you doing today?
My name is Liz, and it's time for Grammar on the Go.
I'm in Egypt right now because we're talking about King Tut in today's article.
We read:
The discovery has made King Tutankhamun, Tut for short, one of the
better-remembered kings of Egypt.
That's our Grammar Tip sentence for today.
Notice the phrase in the middle of the sentence, for short.
It's an idiom that means as a short way of saying a long name.
So in today's sentence, the writer just means that Tut is the short way of
saying Tutankhamun.
"For short" is a great idiom to use when you want to let people know about a
short way of saying a very long name.
For example, you can use this idiom if someone has a long name but prefers
having other people call him by a shorter name, like:
Alexander prefers you call him Alex for short.
Or you can use this idiom when you want to tell people about an organization
that happens to have a very long name.
For example: The United Nations Children's Fund, UNICEF for short, is an agency
of the United Nations.
Now what if you have an opposite situation where you want to let people know the
full name of someone or an organization?
Then you switch "for short" with "short for." For example: Alex is short for
Alexander.
Or UNICEF is short for United Nations Children's Fund.
Well, that's all the time we have for today.
Thanks again for joining me here.
And I hope to see you all again real soon.
Until then, this is Liz with Grammar on the Go, signing off, in Egypt.
Bye-bye.
Hey, Bryan, can I ask you a question?
Sure, Ken.
What do you want to know?
What is "B&B"?
B&B is short for bed and breakfast.
B&B is a short fall... I don't get it.
No, Ken. B&B is short for bed and breakfast.
If something is short for something else, it's a shortened form of it.
Oh, like an abbreviation.
Yes. B&B is an abbreviation of bed and breakfast.
It's short for bed and breakfast.
OK, so that's "short for." What about "for short"?
How do I use "for short"?
Good question.
"For short" has the same meaning, but you'd have to put "bed and breakfast" at
the front of a sentence.
For example: Bed and breakfast, or B&B for short, is a cheap form of lodging.
So do we always use an abbreviation as a short form of something?
Not necessarily.
A lot of names have a short nickname, like Liz is short for Elizabeth, Bill is
short for William.
And Ken is short for Kenneth.
Yep. So I might tell someone who doesn't know you: Kenneth prefers to be called
Ken for short.
OK, now I understand.
Thanks, Bry.
You're welcome, Ken.
