Hello, friends.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
Thanks for joining us.
My name is Steve.
And my name is Ryan.
Now in Nairobi, Kenya, a young girl named Benedicta was attacked by her
neighbor.
The man ran away after the assault.
Luckily, after two years, police finally found and arrested the suspect.
Hmm, however, they didn't only arrest the attacker.
Due to pressure from the attacker's family, police also arrested a man named
Gabriel, Benedicta's innocent father.
Well, police told Gabriel he was facing charges for attacking and stealing from
his daughter's attacker's wife - charges that could carry the death penalty.
So falsely accused, Gabriel was thrown in the same jail cell as the man who had
attacked his daughter.
He seemed completely powerless.
But hope was not lost, friends.
At that moment, the International Justice Mission determined to fight injustices
just like this one:
Stop the police from filing charges that could get Gabriel killed.
That's right.
They also represented him in court ensuring his complete innocence.
So where is Gabriel now?
He's reunited with his family - a completely innocent man.
IJM didn't stop there.
They're continuing to seek justice for his daughter as well.
But at least now Gabriel has been spared the horror of enduring a prison
sentence for crime he didn't commit.
OK. Now join us, friends, as we look closer at how the International Justice
Mission is able to accomplish these tasks at the top of page 43.
(Music).
International Justice Mission.
Haugen observed that many organizations dedicated to helping victims took no
action against perpetrators of injustice, who went on to harm more people.
He realized that his legal training gave him the ability to work with local
legal systems to protect the poor by enforcing laws against harming them.
Haugen founded IJM in 1997 to address all types of injustice worldwide,
including slavery, forced prostitution,
women's lack of land rights and illegal detention by police.
The organization now has field offices in 14 countries in Asia, Africa and
Central and South America, which are run mostly by local staff.
OK, friends. Now we've seen how this lawyer named Gary Haugen wants to make a
difference in the world's justice.
That's right, Ryan.
We have seen that he wants to be a difference.
But we also noticed that he has observed other organizations.
So that means he went in and saw how they were working and was admiring and
taking note of how they were helping because they were dedicated to helping
victims.
He wanted to see that they did.
Right. He saw these other organizations helping other victims.
Of course, a victim is someone who is suffering.
And he watched them take no action against their perpetrators.
Now that's very sad.
That's right.
Now most people, most organizations go in to help people that are being hurt -
the weak people - but no one was making a difference.
No one was taking action, doing anything about the perpetrators.
Right. Now a "perpetrator" here is someone who hurts or does something wrong to
someone else.
And so Gary watched these other organizations do nothing against these
perpetrators.
So he want... he noticed this.
And even though they were helping the people that were hurt, these perpetrators
went on to hurt even more people.
They were harming more people.
Right. So these people are committing crimes.
And since they're not being punished, they're continuing to hurt people.
And now Haugen realized that his legal training actually gave him the ability to
work with local legal systems to protect those poor by enforcing laws against
harming them.
Now Ryan, most people that go into law and into politics don't end up serving in
a situation like this.
Usually they want to be a lawyer or a judge.
And they work... and they earn a lot of money because they paid a lot of money
for school.
But he saw that what he could do was use his information, his knowledge to help.
That's right, Kaylah.
Now in fact, lawyers actually work in what is called "the justice system" that
has to do with law.
But like you said, many of them are only interested in money.
So it is wonderful to see that Haugen was interested in the justice itself.
So he founded IJM in 1997 to address the injustice worldwide.
That's right. He wants to talk about the injustices all over the world and all
of them.
He wasn't going to just stick to one issue.
He wanted to make a difference and get the perpetrators, get the people that
were hurting other people around the world.
That's right. That's what the word "address" here means - it's to do something
about something.
Now including... he wanted to address problems including slavery, forced
prostitution, women's lack of land rights and illegal detention by police.
OK. So these are major problems that are in countries all over the world.
First we see he wanted to work with people who were being enslaved.
Now slavery, we'd like to think in our modern age doesn't exist, but it does.
Yeah, it's still around and it's still sad.
In fact, we heard some stories yesterday about slavery, forced prostitution.
We heard about a widow who lost her land.
And of course, we heard a story about someone being illegally... or having been
in illegal detention by police.
Now "detension" is a form of punishment where they're held in a certain area and
are not released.
Now when we talk about police, that means they're holding them usually in a
prison.
But detension, you can also see at schools.
Detension is where a student who has done something wrong is held in a classroom
for extra time to serve because they did something wrong.
But here we're talking about police illegally holding people in prison.
That's right.
Now yeah, I was a student once, and I was held in detention at school once
before.
But that's very different from being in illegal detention by police where you're
held in jail.
That would be much worse.
Oh, definitely much worse.
You don't get released as quickly.
And a lot of times, the police that are not legally doing this are not concerned
about justice anyway, so they do treat these people poorly.
Right. Many people are held in... in detention legally.
And that means they did something wrong.
If someone is in illegal detention, they are innocent.
They didn't do anything wrong.
So we see they want... this organization IJM wants to help with all these
different problems.
Now the organization has field officers in 14 countries in Asia, Africa and
Central and South America which are mostly run by local staff - so people from
that country.
Right. OK, so they've got the "field offices." Now the word "field" here is
actually referring to something that is away from the main place, in this case,
the office.
So they have different offices in all of these other parts of the world.
That's right. And they're usually run by local staff with help from people from
around the world.
We're going to talk a lot about how this office works, but I would like to see
today's skit first.
Many organizations are dedicated to helping the poor victims of injustice.
Yes, but no action is taken against the perpetrators.
The perpetrators?
Yes. They continue to harm more people.
Well, that's true.
Do you have legal training?
Can you work with local legal systems?
Yes. That's why I started the International Justice Mission.
You started IJM?
Thank you.
So... so you started this organization to address injustice worldwide.
That's right.
We fight against slavery, forced prostitution, women's lack of rights and
illegal detention.
And you confront issues and relieve suffering victims.
That's right. That's why we call it the International Justice Mission.
It helps to find and free slaves like me.
It helps to restore stolen property.
And it works to release people from prison.
Yes.
International Justice Mission.
Well, what else does your organization do?
Well, we strive to take legal action against perpetrators so they won't harm
others.
That will discourage others from similar bad behavior.
Right. And knowing perpetrators are behind bars can reassure victims.
So then they'll feel safe.
Well, that's great!
(Background Noise).
International Justice Mission.
Thank you so much.
