So why does IJM take criminals to court?
Well, when there is no fear of the law, then there is no restraint.
The only way to make sure that they stop is to hold them accountable.
So far this year, there have been over 100 court cases and over 70 convictions.
Over 70 guilty people have been put in jail.
IJM says it's not joyful, but it is good.
OK. Now let's finish our reading on page 44, line 14.
(Music).
International Justice Mission.
These people are united by a passion for protecting and helping the poor and
weak.
Their fervent Christian faith motivates them to devote their lives to fighting
injustice.
IJM believes that all people are made in the image of God, who loves them and
wants to protect them.
In Gary Haugen's words, "This is not a God who offers sympathy, best wishes.
This is a God who wants evildoers brought to account and vulnerable people
protected - here and now!".
OK. Now Kaylah, we are starting to look at the people that actually work for
IJM.
That's right.
These people are united by a passion for protecting and helping the poor and
weak.
And we saw that they are not all from the same background, but they have this in
common.
Exactly. So yeah, they are all united.
So they all work together.
They want to make sure they support each other with their different backgrounds
and their different skills to make sure they can do their job.
And what is that?
Their job is to help protect the weak.
Exactly.
Well, they have a passion for it.
We saw they have a passion.
That means they love to do it, they desire to do it.
They work hard to get this done because they want to be helping people around
the world.
Yeah. They believe in justice, and they want to make sure that injustice is
punished.
That's right.
Now I think, Ryan, what's something very interesting and very cool about this
organization is that they have people from different backgrounds,
which means no matter what you're interested in, if you have a passion for
helping people, this organization could use you.
They're open to different kinds of people and different skills.
Yeah. And we encourage you.
If you are interested in helping with the International Justice Mission, take a
look at their website, IJM.org.
That's right. Well, their fervent Christian faith motivates them to devote their
lives to fighting injustice.
OK. So they have a fervent Christian faith.
The word "fervent" means it is very strong.
And they have a very strong belief, in this case, they are Christians.
That's right.
They're not just people that are wandering the world helping legally, but
they're also sharing the gospel of the Bible that the Christians share.
And that's something wonderful that they take with them.
It's because of their faith, because of their belief that they are working to
help people.
Right. That's what motivates them.
That's what gives them the passion to fight injustice.
Well, IJM believes that all people are made in the image of God.
And that's a very common belief in the Christian faith, and it is very true.
We are all individuals made in the image of God, made for God.
Right. And if you believe that everyone is made in the image of God, then you
believe everyone is important.
You want to make sure that there is justice.
That's right. And as Christians, we work to help other people because if we love
God, we love the people He loves.
And He wants us to help protect them from dangers and from harm when they cannot
protect themselves.
Exactly. So these are wonderful people working for IJM.
They believe God loves everyone and that He wants to protect everyone, and they
want help in that mission.
That's right.
In Gary Haugen's words, so this is what he said, this is a quote from him:
This is not a God who offers sympathy or best wishes.
OK. Now let's take a look at this really fast.
He's referring to God saying that he doesn't believe God just offers sympathy.
What is sympathy?
"Sympathy" means he... he just cares about it but doesn't do anything to help.
Sympathy is a good thing because you do want to take compassion - that means you
care - but that doesn't mean you're taking action.
Yeah. Sympathy, like you said, you could maybe see someone going through
problems and you feel very sorry for them but you don't actually help them.
So that... it doesn't necessarily sound like the God that Haugen believes in.
That's right.
He... God does not just sit back and say: I'm sorry that it's not working out
for you.
He says God is a god who wants to help people.
He takes... He takes evildoers and brings them to justice and helps those who
cannot help themselves.
Exactly. Yeah, exactly. And that's the beauty of this mission.
They all have that passion.
They all believe that God loves everyone and wants to help everyone and protect
them against evildoers. OK.
Now what are evildoers, Kaylah?
Well, evildoers would be people that do evil.
If we flip those two words around, we can see a verb... and the adverb for what
they're doing.
What they're doing? They're doing evil.
They are the criminals.
Exactly. So these criminals, these perpetrators, these evil people need to
have... or need to be stopped.
And so... the victims need to be protected.
That's right.
These evildoers, these criminals are brought to account and vulnerable people
are protected right here and right now.
That's the end of his quote.
We see that they're "brought to account." What does that mean?
OK. If you bring someone to account, it means they... that you bring justice,
they are treated fairly.
Now if you're a criminal and you are treated fairly, it means you are punished.
So we're punishing these evildoers.
And that way, the... people, the vulnerable people are protected.
When you are "vulnerable," that means you are weak and are easily hurt.
That means you can hurt them physically.
You can take something from them, force them into slavery.
So vulnerable people become victims because they cannot protect themselves, so
IJM works to do that.
Right. So this is really exactly what IJM is all about: punishing the people who
are guilty and protecting the people who are weak.
All right. Now let's take a look at today's skit.
(Background Noise).
International Justice Mission fights injustice around the world.
That's fantastic.
But many crimes leave their victims with problems which hinder their return to
normal life.
Hmm, that's true.
Another goal of IJM is to help rescue people overcome their trauma.
Excellent! But you know, injustice persists in many places because police and
courts are corrupt.
Hmm.
Or sometimes they are incapable of enforcing the laws.
Well, in those cases, IJM must work to reform and strengthen the institutions.
Then those systems can provide justice on a permanent basis.
Good idea.
But you cannot achieve these goals on your own, you rely on the skills of
others.
Yes. People united by a passion for protecting and helping the poor and the
weak.
Yes, people with passion.
People with fervent Christian faith that motivates them to fight injustice.
Yes, people with faith.
All people are made in the image of God.
Vulnerable people must be protected.
Yes, protected here and now!
(Background Noise).
Well, I hope you can continue to stop the injustice against poor people around
the world.
International Justice Mission will do its best.
Excellent!
Well, I must be on my way. I have many bricks to make.
Goodbye and thank you again.
Good luck!
Goodbye.
Hi, everyone. I'm Michelle.
(Chinese).
And I hope you also have a fervent desire to keep learning English.
And I'll see you next time.
Bye-bye.
Thank you once again, Michelle, for those helpful tips.
Friends, I hope that you have found inspiration in the International Mission's
devotion to standing up to injustice.
That's right.
They've shown us that though we live in a world where oppression is still
around, there isn't too much we can do to help.
And they bring with them the belief that all people are made in the image of
God, who loves and cares for all mankind.
It is that belief that God wants to protect the weak and punish the evil that
drives the men and women of IJM.
They are truly fueled by love.
Perhaps you feel like to aid in the fight against injustice but don't know how.
Well, feel free to visit the International Justice Mission's website at IJM.org.
OK, friends, we'll see you tomorrow as we name a few Unusual Job Titles.
Until then, it's time to say bye-bye.
Goodbye, friends.
