Well, friends, have you ever dyed your hair?
Have you ever wanted a different hair color?
Maybe you want to have brown hair, or maybe you want blonde hair.
Or you could even want red hair.
But is dyeing your hair a good idea?
I don't know.
Let's join Jane and Lucy on page 48, line 14.
(Music).
To Dye or Not to Dye.
Expensive fun, I think!
Why haven't you colored your hair yet?
Well, frankly, I don't want to damage my hair.
Hair dye does harm your hair, you know.
But don't you think colored hair is more attractive than boring old black?
Yes, colored hair does appeal to my vanity.
But I'd rather have healthy black hair than unhealthy colored hair.
My hair is still healthy.
And besides, I am more concerned about my hair looking pretty!
(Music).
Well, we are talking about dyeing our hair.
Ryan, we see two friends.
We had one who has dyed her hair a lot recently.
Right. We see, yeah, Jane... eh, I'm sorry, Lucy is the one.
She's dyeing her hair a lot.
She's done it many times over the last year.
But Jane tells her: I don't think that's very healthy.
That's right. Maybe it isn't.
And Jane says: Well, it's expensive fun.
So Lucy is saying she likes changing her hair because it's fun.
But Jane thinks it's a little too expensive.
Right. It costs a lot of money to dye your hair and it's also bad for your hair.
But Lucy says: Well, why haven't you colored your hair yet, Jane?
Well, Jane gives exactly the reason Ryan just did:
Frankly, I don't want to damage my hair.
Oh. And that's actually a really good reason.
And here she says the word "frankly." Now what does the word "frankly" mean,
Kaylah?
"Frankly," that means telling the truth in maybe a little bit of a harsh way.
Mmhm. So you're telling the truth, being very direct with what you're saying,
but what you're saying is true.
And so she says: I don't want to damage my hair.
Hair dye does harm your hair, you know.
That's right, it does.
Now friends, I don't know what you know about dyeing your hair, but it does
damage your hair.
Now I'm sure maybe a couple of times isn't bad, but for as much as Lucy has dyed
her hair, this would be... this would cause a lot of damage.
Yeah, it could.
And of course, here we're talking about hair dye.
That is the actual substance.
That's what you put in your hair to change the color.
And that does harm your hair in many different ways.
Lucy says: I... yeah. But you know, don't you think colored hair is more
attractive than just boring old black hair?
Oh. So... well, here she has the idea that black hair is boring.
That means it's not exciting, she doesn't like it.
So she's asking: Don't you think having a color is actually more exciting?
Now this is interesting because, Ryan, no matter where you go in the world,
people tend to have kind of the same hair colors in certain areas.
In Asia, people have black hair.
In... in northeastern Europe, they have blonde hair.
You know, so it's interesting how around the world people just look different.
And therefore, they... but they look the same with the people that are around.
So they're trying to change their hair to make it more colorful.
Maybe it would be more fun and interesting.
Right. And this kind of has to do with people just wanting to be different.
And so here she thinks it's more exciting to have a different color other than
black.
And Jane says: Well, yes, colored hair does appeal to my vanity.
Right. And "vanity" means you have an interest in the way things look, the way
things appear.
And so she says here "it appeals to her vanity." What does that mean?
But vanity even goes a little further than that.
When we're talking about the way it looks, that means my... the personal look.
What do I look like?
What does my look... my thing look like?
What do things that belong to me look like?
So here she's talking about her vanity: What does her hair look like?
And it appeals to her vanity.
That means she would like it because it would make her look better.
And she does think it would look better than just boring old black hair.
OK. Now we're going to explain this sentence a little bit more in Grammar on the
Go.
Hi, there, friends.
I hope you're doing well today.
So is dyeing your hair a good thing or not?
Some people don't like it.
But then there are those who like to dye their hair.
And there could be different reasons why.
One reason as we see in today's article is: ... colored hair does appeal to my
vanity.
That's our Grammar Tip sentence, by the way.
Our focus today is on the phrase, appeal to.
It just means "is considered to be attractive to something." In other words,
today's Grammar Tip sentence just means because of my vanity, colored hair is
considered attractive.
Of course, we could just say: I care a lot about my appearance so I like colored
hair.
However, if you want to be specific about why something is considered attractive
to you, consider using "appeal to." For example,
let's say you just watched a movie that wasn't very good, but the music or
soundtrack was very nice.
Then you can say:
Although I didn't enjoy the plot of the movie, the soundtrack did appeal to my
taste in music.
Or let's say Samantha likes to dine at a certain restaurant because the
restaurant decorations fit her style. So we can say:
Samantha likes to dine at that restaurant because its interior decorations
appeal to her artistic sense.
If you turn to today's Grammar Tip section, you'll find more example sentences
there.
This is Liz with Grammar on the Go, signing off.
Bye-bye.
She says: I'd rather have healthy black hair than unhealthy colored hair.
So she says: Yes, it appeals to my vanity. Yes, I think it would look nice. But
I'd rather have healthy hair.
Yeah. And that makes sense.
She would rather be healthy than actually look good.
And that's actually, I think, a very good decision.
That's right. But Lucy still makes an argument.
She says: My hair is still healthy.
I'm glad to hear that for Lucy.
And she says: Besides, I'm more concerned about my hair looking pretty than it
being actually very healthy.
OK. So Lucy's idea is the opposite of Jane's.
She would much rather have pretty or good-looking hair than healthy hair.
Now Kaylah, I have to ask you.
Have you ever dyed your hair?
A-ha. Yes, Ryan, I have, in fact, dyed my hair.
I've dyed it twice.
One time I just... like you, I put blonde streaks in it, but I didn't like that
very much.
I like my hair darker.
So I tried to dye it kind of a red color, but it turned more purple.
Purple? Oh, no.
So it can go wrong in many other ways too.
Now is your hair dyed right now?
No. My hair is its natural color now, and it is the healthiest I can have my
hair.
That's good.
And mine too, actually.
So we see there are some problems already with dyeing your hair.
It can be unhealthy, it can be expensive.
And like Kaylah just told us, it can go wrong too.
Well, I'm sure there... there are all kinds of reasons to dye or to not dye your
hair.
And we're going to get to look at some of those.
But before we do, let's listen to some interviews.
I'd like to keep my natural hair color rather than dye my hair.
The main reason is it's not very easy to find hair dye products that are
chemical-free.
Any... chemical ingredients may hurt hair and gradually change hair quality if
you use it very often.
Another reason I don't like to dye my hair is it usually takes time and costs a
lot of money to take care of it.
Whether I choose to dye my hair at home or go to a hair salon to have it done
professionally, I have to spend time and afford the price it charges.
If I would like to have my hair color... last longer, I also need some more hair
protection products or find a hair salon to fix it regularly.
In my point of view, being natural is beautiful.
I prefer to keep my original hair color than change it.
I prefer not to dye my hair.
Although if I dye my hair, I can change my appearance in more variety of ways.
I don't like having chemicals in my hair or on my face so I don't like using
makeup that has chemicals or hair dyes that have chemicals in it.
Um, of course there are natural hair... dyes.
But natural hair dyes don't last as long and they're more expensive.
So until my hair is white and I'm forced to dye my hair, I probably will not dye
my hair.
Hi, everyone. I'm Michelle.
(Chinese).
And time really flies.
Make sure you come back tomorrow.
Bye-bye.
Well, thank you again, Michelle, for those helpful tips.
And friends, please be sure to use those words when you practice English.
Now here's a question.
Are you afraid what people might think if you dyed your hair?
Yes!
Oh. Why? Is it a bad color?
No. It looks really natural.
OK, Kaylah, so then let's see it.
Hmm... only if you dye your hair too, Steve.
Kaylah, my hair is really nice just the way it is. Thank you.
Then I won't show you my hair.
OK. OK, Kaylah, you have a deal.
What?
Friends, my homework tonight is finding out how to dye my hair.
Oh... Well, I hope you have a great night doing that.
Friends, thanks for joining us.
We'll see you tomorrow.
