(Music).
Hi, everybody.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
Thanks for joining us.
With us today is Kaylah.
Welcome back, Kaylah.
Thanks.
I'm here and I'm happy to see, Steve, that you have something on your head.
I do, indeed.
It is a towel.
I see that.
It is just like mine.
Well, not the same color, but still, a towel.
That's right.
Did you dye your hair too?
I thought I would try it, yes.
Wow! What color?
Well, I'm not going to tell you until you show me and everyone else your hair
first.
But we aren't done talking about hair dyeing.
I don't want my hair to change someone's mind.
OK, that's fair.
Let's make a deal.
Hmm... OK.
I will show you my hair if you show me yours.
Sounds good.
But first, let's hear some more opinions about dyeing hair on page 49.
(Music).
To Dye or Not to Dye.
Well, beware the price of beauty.
Some people say that using hair dye too often increases the risk of some kinds
of cancer.
Oh, come on. That was true back in the 70s.
Not today.
I'm just telling you what I heard.
Anyway, not all hair dyes are bad for you.
I have heard that some hair dyes use herbs for coloring.
They are called "natural hair dyes.".
Really? And are those supposed to be better for my hair?
So dyeing your hair... To Dye or Not to Dye?
That's our question today.
Is it good to dye your hair or not?
Well, we've heard some good arguments on both sides.
Yeah, we've heard that, of course, dyeing your hair can make it look very pretty
depending on what color you want.
But of course, it can go wrong too.
That's right. I've had that mistake before where my hair did not look pretty
afterwards.
We can... we've also seen that it can cost you a lot of money.
And we've seen that it can damage your hair.
That's right.
Now we start off today by Jane saying: Well, you need to beware of the price of
beauty.
Ah, the price of beauty.
I think this is an interesting sentence.
It has two meanings here, friends.
Do you know what those are?
Well, first, let's talk about the word "beware." If you are to beware of
something, it means you should be warned of danger.
That means you should be careful of something.
And here she's saying: You should be careful of the price of beauty.
And like Kaylah said, there are two meanings.
What do you think the first one would be?
Well, I think the obvious option first is the price, the cost of getting your
hair dyed.
The cost of going to a beauty shop, to a salon to have your hair done - that's
one price.
Right. So you're paying money to get your hair done.
It costs a lot of money for hair dye.
So of course, you would want to beware of the price or the amount of money
you're paying for beauty.
But what else, Kaylah?
Well, we also talked about the health of your hair.
Now we can consider something that you give up that is valuable a cost.
Even if it is not money, it is a cost.
So this... what would it cost you? What is the price?
Is healthy hair the price of getting to be beautiful, getting to have beautiful
hair?
This is a good way to write... This is a really interesting way to write using
double meanings like this.
And this word "price" is a great option for it because it talks about anything
that has value and having to give it up.
Right. What are you giving up to look beautiful?
And she continues saying: Some people say that using hair dye too often can
actually increase the risk of some kinds of cancer.
What? But Lucy doesn't believe that.
She says: Oh, come on. That was true back in the 70s. Not today.
Well, it's 2012, so the 70s were a long time ago.
So I think it is safe to say that you probably won't get cancer from hair
products.
Today, they're very careful with it.
There are a lot of rules and regulations.
So she brought this up, but it's actually not really a good point.
Yeah. That might not be true anymore.
And even Jane admits she just heard it somewhere.
She was just telling Lucy something that she had heard before.
You could call that a rumor.
Ooh, a rumor. This is... that's a good word, Ryan.
This is definitely a rumor.
I just... you know, I just heard that somewhere.
Maybe we say that when we are talking about somebody when we shouldn't be saying
something about them and somebody doesn't believe us:
"Oh. I didn't say it! It's just... I just heard that somewhere. I'm just telling
you what I heard." So don't be...
Don't use this sentence because it means you're probably gossiping or talking
about something that you cannot prove.
And you need to be speaking truth.
Right. So she's not able to use that argument anymore.
So then Lucy continues by saying: Anyway, not all hair dyes are bad for you.
This is true.
I like this point because a lot of people think that all hair dyes are the same
that they're going to ruin your hair,
absolutely just make it terrible, kill the... kill the roots of your hair and
everything, but that's not the case.
Some have been made to be good for your hair.
Right. Now Kaylah, I have heard before that some hair dyes can make your hair
very dry.
Is that true?
That's very true. I know if you dye your hair too often, the ends dry out, both
the ends by the roots as well as the bottom.
And they kind of split open.
And they get really gross.
They're kind of hard to brush through.
They stick out in funny places.
But if you have healthy hair, you can control that.
Right. And that's probably not true of every hair dye either.
Now Jane says: I've heard that some hair dyes use herbs for coloring.
This is, I think, an absolutely brilliant idea because everywhere in the world,
people want to dye their hair, so why not use something natural?
They're called "natural hair dyes." And this uses an herb to color something.
Right. Now an "herb" is talking about a type of plant.
Usually when we're talking about herbs, they are put into food to add extra
flavor.
But right now we're referring to the plants that have a certain color.
You can use those plants to put into dyes to naturally change your hair color.
OK, let's do an example.
For example, the... the herb cinnamon is kind of a red color.
So maybe you want... your hair the color of cinnamon, so I don't know... I don't
know if they actually use cinnamon in hair dyes.
But you get the idea that the herb has a color itself that you can then use to
color hair.
Right. And that would not be as bad for your hair, your hair would still be
really healthy.
And Lucy says: Really? Are those supposed to be better for my hair?
Well, I guess so.
Well, I think they will be better just if you think about it "naturally." It
comes from a natural substance.
It comes from a plant.
And your hair is a natural substance.
It comes out of your head, naturally.
We don't put it there.
So they do... it does sound like it could be a better option.
It does sound like it could be better.
And of course, we'll find out a little bit more about that later.
For right now it seems very interesting.
We've got both sides: Is it healthy? Is it not healthy?
We know it can be expensive, but maybe it doesn't have to be.
Now right now, let's go visit the Chat Room.
Hi, Ken.
What are you reading today?
Oh. Hi, Bryan.
I'm reading an article about celebrities.
Oh. What kind of celebrities?
Are they movie stars?
Some of them were movie stars.
But the article focuses on how the careers of some celebrities were ruined by
bad habits like drinking and gambling.
That is a shame.
I agree.
Say, there is one sentence in the article I'm confused about.
It talks about the price of fame, but it never mentions an actual price.
Why is that?
I think that's a good question for Studio Classroom Editor-in-Chief Doris.
Let's go to her.
OK.
Sometimes we talk about the price of things like fame and beauty.
Of course, we aren't thinking of a certain amount of money.
We use "price" to represent the hard work and sacrifice required to become
famous or to make oneself more handsome or beautiful.
Another common phrase is "the price of success." If you want to be successful in
life, you have to pay the price of working hard.
Those are great examples.
In the case of the price of fame, though, it seems like the price those
celebrities paid wasn't necessarily a good thing.
That's true, Ken.
It's almost as if the writer was saying that the price the celebrities paid was
too high,
and that the fame they earned was not worth all the pain they went through.
Now that makes sense.
So some things are worth paying the price for and some are not.
Yep. It all depends on what you're after.
What about the price of success?
Isn't that always something worth investing in?
Generally, yes. It is.
You could say that your many hours spent reading English books are the price of
success.
Yeah. That is a price I'm willing to pay.
And it seems to be leading to some good results for you.
