Friends, I have a lot of friends throughout my life that had dyed their hair and
others that don't think you should.
So I have heard both sides of this argument throughout my life.
Well, I've also had the opportunity to dye my own hair and see friends dye their
hair.
And I think one thing I just do not like about dyeing hair is the smell, the
smell of the chemicals.
Now it's not good for your hair with these chemicals.
It's also not good for your skin because it will stay in your skin.
But we see right before the break, we talked about an option not using
chemicals, using herbs instead.
I think this should be a very interesting discussion.
So let's get started on page 49 on line 12.
To Dye or Not to Dye.
I guess so.
They're not supposed to contain chemicals that make your hair so brittle.
That sounds too good to be true!
In a way, it is.
Your hair color won't turn out as vibrant as usual, though.
So you can't go bright red or blonde anymore, right?
I guess not.
There is no way I am going to do it the natural way then.
I'll just get hair dye at the store.
At least get it done at a salon where there are professionals.
It's much more expensive!
True. Well, I guess you can do what you want.
It's your hair.
(Music).
So Ryan, what do you think?
Should you or should you not dye your hair?
Or are you even ready to make a decision yet?
Hmm, I'm not sure if we're all ready to make a decision yet, although I know I
probably won't dye my hair anytime soon.
I like my hair color.
Well, that's good. I'm glad you like your hair color.
It is a very nice shade of brown.
Oh, thanks!
So Jane is... we're talking... we're back in our conversation with them talking
about herbs versus chemicals, and are herbs better for your hair?
Right. Now Jane says: I guess so. They are not supposed to contain those
chemicals that make your hair very brittle.
Now "brittle" is a great word to describe what hair dye can do to your hair.
Now "brittle" means it is delicate and easily broken.
So if we think about ice, if you have a very thin layer of ice on something,
it's very brittle.
It's delicate.
You tap it and it breaks very easily.
Now how does this relate to your hair, though?
Well, with your hair, each strand can actually break at the end if you do not
treat it well.
So if your hair is healthy, then it is fine, it will not break.
But if it is not healthy, it can become brittle.
And that is very bad for your hair.
That's right. Lucy thinks this is wonderful.
She says, "That sounds too good to be true!" Hair dye that doesn't ruin my hair?
Right, yeah. And she uses this phrase "too good to be true." We've seen this
before.
That means she doesn't think it's possible.
Well, we're going to find out, Ryan. Is it possible?
Jane says, "In a way, it is." In a way, it is just a little too good to be true.
Mmhm. She says: Your hair color won't turn out as vibrant as usual with these
herbal... with the herbs that used... that are in the hair dye.
OK. So if you're using an herbal hair dye, the color won't be as vibrant.
That means it's very bright and easily noticed and very clean, very pure, very
distinct color as if you used a chemical.
Right. So here you have a choice.
Do you want your hair to look very vibrant, very beautiful, or do you want it to
stay healthy and not be as vibrant?
I think this is a good question.
What would you do?
Well, I think that I would probably choose... actually I'd probably choose the
vibrant color.
Oh. So you like the bright colors... (Yeah.)... and not so concerned about your
healthy hair.
Oh. OK.
But still it's important if you want to have a healthy head of hair later in
your life to maybe choose the one made of herbs.
So Lucy asks: So you couldn't go bright red or blonde anymore, right?
Because she's starting with black hair, so to turn black hair blonde, to turn it
a yellow gold color, you need vibrant color to do that.
And you probably wouldn't be able to do that with the herb-based dye.
Right. So she wouldn't be able to become bright red or a blonde with that.
Because in order to become those colors, you need to use the stronger chemicals,
not the hair dye that is made with herbs.
And Jane says: Well, I guess not.
I guess this is not a possibility anymore.
She's dyed her hair so much, it may be a little bit of a disappointment.
Yeah. She says: Well, there's no way to do it the natural way then. I'll just
get my hair done at the store.
So she's saying: Even though it would be nice to have healthy, natural hair, I
don't get the same color.
And the whole reason I'm dyeing my hair is for the color, not for the health.
So I want the color!
So I'll just go to the store and dye it there.
Right. She says... Now Jane says at least get it done at a salon where there are
professionals.
Now a "salon" is a shop that we go for beauty treatments.
Here we're talking about hair, so getting your hair cut, or dyed, or permed.
But you can also get your nails done or maybe your skin checked.
This is what a salon is for.
Right. Usually the women are the ones going to the salon to get their nails done
or their hair done.
And usually men might go to a place called a "barbershop." But now... nowadays,
they're kind of almost the same thing.
That's right.
Nowadays barbershops don't exist as much, so men also go to a salon to get their
hair cut.
They can also go and get a shave at a salon.
That's right.
Now Kaylah, I... I'm going to ask you again.
You told us all about how you have dyed your hair.
Did you dye your hair in a salon?
No, Ryan, I did not.
Oh, I made a mistake!
I should have gone to a a salon to dye my hair.
But I... I just thought it was too expensive, I didn't want to pay for it.
And I ended up with purple hair.
So I probably should have just paid for the goods... the hair dye in the first
place.
Right. That's why it's probably better to make sure you go where professionals
can do the hair for you.
After all, a professional gets paid to do it.
It is their job.
Lucy makes my point.
She says it's so expensive.
It's so much more expensive because, Ryan, the other option is to buy a box at a
store and take it home and dye your hair yourself.
Now that is way cheaper.
And that's what I thought.
I was like: Oh, it's cheaper. I'll just do it at home.
Oops! I ended up with the wrong colored hair.
Right. So maybe you can try to save some money if you're dyeing your hair as
well.
But it might also go wrong.
You might not get the exact hair color that you wanted.
And that's exactly what Jane says.
She says: True. But... I guess if you want to do your own hair, that's fine.
It's your hair.
In the end, it's still not her head of hair.
Right. So she says: It's up to you, whatever you decide.
It's your hair, not mine.
So now you've been given some interesting tips on whether or not you should dye
your hair.
Now right now, let's take a look at this interview.
The most common reason for young people to dye their hair is to give it a
different color.
For example, turning black hair blonde.
I really like my hair color.
And I think I wouldn't look right if I dyed it.
I think one's natural color always looks better with one's skin.
Of course, whether to dye or not to dye your hair is really up to you.
But remember this: If you do color, you better choose natural dyes.
According to the American Cancer Society, permanent dyes that contain heavy-duty
chemicals pose the most potential health risk.
If you do want to color your hair, you better choose natural dyes.
But it is advised the less chemically you process your hair, the healthier it
remains.
I believe people dyeing hair for two reasons.
One is they like to change their hair color so they can look more beautiful.
Other one is probably they have grey hair and they want to cover it so that they
can look more younger.
In my opinion, if dyeing hair can make you attractive and confident, why not?
(Chinese).
And don't forget to come back next time.
I'll see you then.
Bye-bye.
Thank you again, Michelle.
And by the way, I really like your hair color.
OK, friends, the question today is: Is dyeing your hair a good thing or not?
Well, I do like the idea of a little bit of change.
But you know, I like healthy hair too.
Kaylah, I want to see what color you chose for your hair.
You know, I thought about doing something a little bit crazy.
Yeah, me too.
But, you know, then I changed my mind and I... I went with this, you know.
So I kept it really close to my... to my normal hair.
What?
Well, do you like it?
Kaylah, that doesn't look any different from your original hair color.
Well... you know, it is just a little bit darker.
I like it!
OK. Now let me see yours.
No.
Well, Steve, we had a deal.
OK, fine...
So... what do you think?
Well... you... you look like a... kind of like a clown.
What? I think... I think I'll visit the salon now.
Maybe they can fix it.
Good idea.
But can you say goodbye to our friends first?
All right. Friends, we hope you had a great time today with us.
We certainly enjoyed this lesson.
Please join us again for another lesson next time at Studio Classroom.
Goodbye.
