(Music).
The area known as Zhangjiajie used to be called Dayong City in 1988.
It wasn't called Zhangjiajie until 1994.
Today, it is a very popular tourist destination, and it's easy to see why.
With its gorgeous mountains, its green lakes, deep caves and large valleys, it
truly paints a beautiful picture.
Now let's turn to page 50 and look at line 3 to continue learning about this
beautiful park.
(Music).
Zhangjiajie.
The recently developed facilities and resources have made this area a thriving
tourist destination known for its majestic scenery.
Zhangjiajie is most famous for the Wulingyuan Scenic Area, which covers an area
of 396 square kilometers.
Its most distinctive feature is its towering sandstone pillars, of which there
are more than 3,000.
This geological phenomenon can't be found in such a large number anywhere else.
Many of these pillars rise to over 200 meters in height.
Wulingyuan is divided into three areas: Zhangjiajie Forest Park, Suoxi Valley
and Tianzi Mountain.
Each one offers a one-of-a-kind view of nature and glimpses of a local lifestyle
rich in culture.
(Music).
All right. So we know that Zhangjiajie is a popular tourist destination thanks
to the recently developed facilities and resources.
This is great because it's a beautiful national park to be visiting.
It's got lots of nature and wonderful things in it.
But even more than that, now it has developed facilities and resources, and it's
a lot of to thrive.
So this could be a tourist destination, which, you know, was already known for
its majestic scenery.
But now it's even more accessible.
We can get there easier.
That's right.
Now of course, a tourist destination is a place that is very popular for people
to visit.
And of course, like Kaylah said, it's known for having majestic scenery.
Now let's take a look at the meaning of the word majestic.
"Majestic" is beautiful and powerful.
It causes you to just stand in wonder and amazement how amazing it really is.
Now there are a lot of things we consider majestic.
Uh, one of them, I think my favorite are just mountains in general.
Looking at mountains, they're very majestic, they're very beautiful.
There are places all over the world we could consider majestic.
What... what would you call majestic?
Well, I actually love the ocean.
I think it's very beautiful and actually a bit more calming, but it always makes
me feel awe-inspired.
I feel that it is very majestic.
Well, this place... does not have a shortage of majestic scenery.
There's so much to see and do now that they have it set up for tourists.
That's right.
It's most famous for the Wulingyuan Scenic Area, which covers an area of 396
square kilometers.
Now that's a very large area when you talk about that many kilometers.
What is a scenic area, though?
If it's so beautiful, wouldn't it all be scenic?
Well, yeah. Most of Zhangjiajie is beautiful.
But this is a scenic area, which means it's a place that people all want to go
see.
It's one smaller place that is most beautiful.
And actually, Kaylah, this is what Zhangjiajie is most famous for.
That's right.
If features the towering sandstone pillars, of which there are more than 3,000.
That is a lot of sandstone pillars.
Yes. And of course, again on page 50, you can see pictures of these beautiful
sandstone pillars, of which there are more than 3,000.
Now we're using this phrase, "of which," so let's go visit Liz with Grammar on
the Go and learn more about that.
Hi, friends. Greetings from Zhangjiajie in Hunan province, China.
My name is Liz and it's time for Grammar on the Go.
So we've been talking about this amazing place Zhangjiajie, and we read:
Its most distinctive feature is its towering sandstone pillars of which there
are more than 3000.
That's our Grammar Tip sentence.
This sentence is basically made up of two parts.
Part 1: Its most distinctive feature is its towering standstone pillars.
Part 2: There are more than 3000 of these sandstone pillars.
These two parts are combined together and connected with the phrase, of which.
This can be done when part 2 is a description of the subject or noun in part 1.
Let's look at some examples.
Here are two parts that we can connect.
Part 1: Qilan Forest Park has a large number of cypress trees.
Part 2: Out of these Cypress trees, the majority are red cypress trees.
Connect these two parts together and we get:
Qilan Forest Park has a large number of cypress trees of which the majority are
red cypress trees.
Or let's say there is an upcoming children's concert sponsored by a church, and
500 tickets have been sold.
That's part 1.
And here's part 2: Out of these 500 tickets, 200 of them were purchased by a
teacher.
Put these two parts together and we have:
The church sold 500 tickets of which 200 were purchased by a teacher.
If you'd like to see some more example sentences, you'll find them in today's
Grammar Tip section in your Studio Classroom magazine.
That's it for today.
This is Liz with Grammar on the Go, signing off.
Bye-bye.
OK. So these giant pillars are featured in this park.
There're so many of them, and it's "featured." That means it's something
special, it's what we go to look at.
But what makes them special, Ryan?
What makes a sandstone pillar so beautiful?
Well, these "pillars" are very tall and strong.
That's what the word "pillar" means.
It's uh... very strong, tall structure made out of either stone or metal or
wood.
In this case, these are natural pillars.
They're natural. That means they were not made by man.
They were made by nature.
They're there all by themselves.
That's right.
And they are very "distinctive," which means they're very easy to see, and very
unique.
Well, what also makes this unique are there are 3,000 of them.
This geological phenomenon can't be found in such a large number anywhere else
in the world.
Yeah. In fact, I don't think I've really ever seen anything like this before.
It truly is a beautiful geological event.
That's right.
Now "geological" is referring to rocks. It was referring to the Earth, to rocks,
stones, dirt... geology.
That is what the Earth is made of.
Yeah, anything referring to the surface of the Earth is what the word
"geological" is talking about.
Well, we also have the word "phenomenon." What does phenomenon mean?
Well, a phenomenon is an event, usually an event that isn't really easily
explained.
That's right. It's incredible. It's amazing.
We remember it. It's a phenomenon!
And this is a natural phenomenon, which means man didn't create it.
Exactly. Now many of these pillars rise to over 200 meters in height.
That is extremely tall.
Yes, it is.
And Wulingyuan is divided into three areas.
There's Zhangjiajie Forest Park, Suoxi Valley and Tianzi Mountain.
Now each one offers a one-of-a-kind view of nature and a glimpse of a local
lifestyle rich in culture.
So all three locations have beautiful nature but also great culture that is
unique to it.
Yeah. So you'll definitely get a one-of-a-kind or a unique view of nature.
For right now, let's take a look at this video.
(Music).
(Chinese).
And we're running out of time again.
Keep up the good work and I'll see you tomorrow.
Thank you very much, Michelle.
You know, I think geologists agree that southern China has the largest
collection of rock outcroppings on the planet.
And many would argue that this collection is the most beautiful in the world.
Some other places that come to mind for one-of-a-kind stone formations in China
are the Stone Forest of Yunnan province,
and of course, the famous limestone outcroppings of Yangshuo in Guangxi.
How did all these gigantic stone pillars form?
Well, just like the stone arches we studied last November - a little wind, a
little rain and a lot of time.
OK, friends, please return tomorrow when we explore more of Zhangjiajie Forest
Park.
Until then, have a great day.
Bye-bye, everybody.
