Hi, everybody.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
My name is Steve.
And my name is Ryan.
If you've ever seen an ancient Chinese painting of a mystical mountain scene, a
misty fair land with craggy rocks, pristine lakes and waterfalls,
well, chances are you were looking at a painting inspired by the Zhangjiajie
Forest.
Located in China's Hunan province,
Zhangjiajie combines the beauty of Guilin and the strangeness of Huangshan and
the ruggedness of Huashan and the majesty of Tai Shan.
Very good, man. Good, so.
If you want to enjoy mountain scenery in China but you only have time to go to
one place, Zhangjiajie would be the place to go.
OK. Today we're going to go back to Zhangjiajie.
Please follow along as we read on page 51.
(Music).
Zhangjiajie.
Zhangjiajie Forest Park.
Established in 1982, Zhangjiajie Forest Park is China's first national forest
park.
It covers 13 square kilometers and is known for its mountain views, plunging
cliffs and sandstone columns.
In the park, tourists can hike, walk beside the clean waters of the Golden Whip
Brook or explore the mountain settlement of Yellow Lion Village (Huangshizhai).
The mountain is accessible by cable car as well, for visitors who want to avoid
a difficult hike.
Zhangjiajie Village is a resource for tourists.
(Music).
OK. So we're back looking at Zhangjiajie National Park in China.
That's right. Now this park has a lot to offer.
We talked about the incredible nature,
the phenomenons of these columns that are there that you can't find them
anywhere else in the world in such a large number.
Now right before we left off yesterday, we talked about three different areas of
this park.
That's right.
There's the Zhangjiajie Forest Park, Suoxi Valley and of course, Tianzi
Mountain.
And these are all very beautiful places, and we want to start taking a closer
look at each one.
That's right. So each one we learned yesterday can offer you a unique natural
experience and a cultural experience.
So let's find out what those experiences are.
We'll start with the Zhangjiajie Forest Park.
OK.
Starting with Zhangjiajie Forest Park, we see it is established in 1982, and it
was China's first national forest park.
That's really cool.
It was "established." That means it was created, it was decided that it was
going to be a national park in 1982.
And that's the first one in all of China.
Yeah, it was the very first national park.
Of course, we know a national park is an area of land that is protected by a
government for people to go and enjoy.
Well, it's actually... it's the first natural... national forest park.
So maybe it is a little bit different because it's focusing on the forested
areas.
Well, it covers 13 square kilometers and is known for its mountain views,
plunging... cliffs and sandstone columns.
Yes. OK. So this sounds very amazing actually.
I like that they use the word "plunging" here to talk about the cliffs.
What does the word "plunging" talk about?
Well, "plunging," it means it goes deep.
It dives deep into something.
So the cliffs, if you think about a cliff, it is very tall.
It plunges to the earth where it connects, so it goes down very deep into the
earth.
So it's a very tall cliff.
Yeah, exactly. Something that goes down a very long way could be described as
plunging.
Now we've also talked about the word "plunge" this month, and they are the same
word used in different ways.
That's right. One of them is the movement of plunging, to be diving down.
That is a verb.
And then a plunging cliff would be more of an adjective describing the depth of
how tall this cliff really is.
OK. And of course, we have been talking about the sandstone columns.
And the word "sandstone" here is talking about a type of rock that has... that
is made out of sand, and so these can be shaped very easily by rain.
And that is how we make those incredible-looking columns.
That's right.
Sandstone wears away relatively quickly as opposed to other rocks in the rain in
the weather, so that's how we get these columns.
Well, in the park, tourists can hike, walk beside the clean waters of Golden
Whip Brook or explore the mountain settlement of Yellow Lion Village.
OK. So there's a lot to do here.
You can explore nature, it seems like, walking by the Golden Whip... stream here
and see some very incredible views.
That's right. We... a stream or a brook is the same thing.
It's a small... it's basically a small river.
So it flows very... it's a running water but in a smaller area.
So that could be a brook or a stream.
Yes. And you can also enjoy the mountain settlement of Yellow Lion Village, also
called Huangshizhai.
Now Yellow Lion Village is a mountain settlement.
What does that mean?
A settlement is where people live.
This is where they have decided to go into the land and make their homes.
So if it's a mountain... settlement, that means they've gone into the mountains
and created a place to live.
Yeah, OK, so you can actually see where these people live.
Now the mountain is accessible by cable car as well.
Now "accessible" means you can get to it.
Now I said that we... the tourist areas are now more accessible.
That means we can easily get to them.
You can take a car or a train or... That means you're able to get there.
Here it's accessible by a cable car.
Right. OK, so a cable car is talking about a type of vehicle that is pulled by a
cable.
And so here you can actually... you can see a picture on page 51 of your Studio
Classroom magazine of these cable cars that are hanging in the air.
You can see some very incredible views from these as well.
That's right. Another name for a cable car would be a "gondola." So you could
call them both.
Usually a gondola, though, is open; and a cable car is going to be enclosed.
So visitors can take a cable car or... they... if they want to avoid the hiking,
the difficult hike.
But you could also hike up to this village.
Yeah. And if you're hiking, that means you're walking through nature.
Usually it's a very beautiful-looking walk that you can take.
But it looks like the hills here would be very difficult to walk on.
Definitely! So you can take the cable car up if you would prefer that.
Well, Zhangjiajie Village is a resource for tourists.
So there's also a village in this forest park area that you can collect
information if you need information about where you are or just pick up other
resources along the way.
Exactly. OK, so now let's take a look at this video.
