Hello, friends.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
My name is Steve.
Hello, friends.
It's great to have you here with us today.
My name is Kaylah.
You know, different people love different kinds of animals.
I know I once had a cat.
His name was Wazel.
And he was my favorite animal growing up.
Did you have any pets?
Yes, I had a favorite dog.
His name was Snooky.
See, I loved that little dog so much, I thought that he should be famous.
Well, to a lot of people their animals should be famous because we love them so
much.
But today we're looking at some very famous animals.
So join us on page 14 of your Studio Classroom magazines as we learn about some
famous caring and heroic animals.
(Music).
Famous Animals.
Learn about some of history's most famous furry and not-so-furry friends.
Some animals capture the imagination of the world.
Let's find out what brought these animals such esteem!
Koko.
This gorilla's impressive brain earned her fame.
Dr. Penny Patterson taught Koko how to speak American Sign Language,
and today, Koko knows over 1,000 signs and understands even more spoken English.
Barry.
This faithful animal of the 19th century is still remembered for his work in the
Alps.
This particularly brave dog liberated more than 40 people trapped by the snow in
the dangerous St. Bernard Pass between Italy and Switzerland.
Hello, everyone.
Thank you so much for joining us.
My name is Ryan.
And my name is Kaylah.
Ryan, do you enjoy being with animals?
Oh, sure. Yeah, I enjoy um, pets.
I have a dog at home.
They're a lot of fun.
Great. Well, friends, I hope you like animals as well because today we are
talking about Famous Animals.
We can learn about some of history's most famous furry and not-so-furry friends.
That's right. We're going to be talking about animals that everyone knows; they
are famous.
And we'll see why they are famous as we talk about each one.
Now some animals capture the imagination of the world.
That's right. Let's find out what brought these animals such esteem.
Now Ryan, what does "esteem" mean?
Well, "esteem" means very great respect.
And so these animals are famous, they're getting a lot of respect; they're
well-known.
That's right.
Well, we have some information about that.
So let's visit the Information Station.
Bryan, it's amazing what some of these animals are able to do.
Yes, it is, Bill.
If trained the right way, animals are capable of many things.
In fact, we've been working on our own animal training project right here.
At...
Information Station.
With the beginning of a new year, here at Information Station, we wanted to make
a big announcement.
And so we give you... Tango Bear.
Yes. Tango Bear is our very own intelligent animal that we've been training.
Now in the beginning Tango Bear was only able to play checkers.
But then he moved on to chess.
And then we gave him an iPhone, and he loved Angry Birds.
Once Tango Bear mastered games, we knew he could learn new skills very quickly
such as carpentry.
He really enjoys plumbing and riding around town delivering packages.
With his amazingly high IQ, we decided to train Tango Bear in more difficult
jobs.
Since he grew up in America, Tango Bear has no problem teaching English.
And he's helped Information Station give important computer presentations.
Obviously, Tango Bear has strong technical skills.
So he has spent time as a pilot.
And studied to become a doctor.
But it's not all work and no play for Tango Bear.
He likes to hang out at his favorite coffee shop.
Play some music with the guys after work.
But his favorite thing to do is spend hours dancing the tango.
In fact, Tango Bear has his very own page on Facebook.
So you can follow his progress here at...
Information Station.
(Music).
Now the first famous animal we are going to talk about is named Koko.
That's right.
This gorilla's impressive brain earned her fame.
Now a "gorilla" we could call an ape.
Where are they from?
Yeah. Well, they are from Africa.
They are very large creatures related to the monkeys.
That's right. They... they have a posable thumbs and they...
But they're very large, so they don't spend too much time in trees...; they do,
but they have to be big trees because these are big apes.
That's right. And they are known for being very big, very strong, but they're
also known for being intelligent.
That's right.
Dr. Penny Patterson taught Koko, this gorilla, how to speak American Sign
Language,
which, Ryan, is the language you use to speak with your hands.
That's right. We talked a little bit about that last year.
And so now not just humans are using it, but this gorilla Koko knows it as well.
She knows over 1,000 signs and, Kaylah, she even understands more spoken
English.
Absolutely.
It is amazing that she understands so much English.
Well, another amazing animal is Barry.
That's right.
This faithful animal of the 19th century is still remembered for his work in the
Alps.
Now the Alps are mountains between Italy and Switzerland.
And that's where he worked.
That's right.
Now this particularly brave dog liberated more than 40 people trapped by the
snow in the dangerous St. Bernard Pass between Italy and Switzerland.
Now they... he "liberated" them.
That means he set them free.
Ryan, what was keeping them trapped?
Well, here they were trapped by snow.
It was very dangerous in this pass, and so they needed to be rescued.
That's right.
The Alps are very large mountains and have a lot of snow, and people going
through them would get lost.
And this dog, as well as other St. Bernards, worked to rescue them from the snow
so they wouldn't die.
But Barry is the most famous.
That's right.
These are some amazing animals.
And we will talk about more after thebreak.
