Hello, everybody.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
Thanks for joining us today.
My name is Steve.
And my name is Kaylah.
Today we're visiting Kruger National Park up in the northeastern corner of South
Africa.
Now you can get to the park one of two ways: either by small plane for $350 one
way, or by automobile,
a cheaper option but more time-consuming.
If you drive, expect about a six-hour trip if you're coming from Johannesburg.
So if you have the time, driving might be the better option simply because once
you get there, you'll want a car to get around.
That's right. Kruger National Park is huge - just a little smaller than the size
of Belgium.
And there are no such things as public buses or trains.
OK. Let's learn more about getting around Kruger National Park over on page 7.

Kruger National Park: It's Wild.
How do you see Kruger Park?
Most would tell you to drive around the park yourself.
While that may sound intimidating, it's actually quite easy.
An extensive network of roads and 26 rest camps allow you to travel in the park
with ease.
Staying at a rest camp allows you to experience the evening and night sounds of
the animals.
With a variety of lodging options at the camps, there is something to suit every
traveler.
There are basic campsites or tents if you want to rough it.

Hello, friends.
Thank you so much for joining us.
My name is Ryan.
Hello, friends.
My name is Kaylah.
We're excited to have you back to continue our talk on Kruger National Park.
Now yesterday, Ryan, we learned some interesting things about it.
Yeah. We saw the different kinds of animals you can find there.
There are reptiles.
There are also mammals.
And you can even see some of the natural beauty of Africa.
That's right. We talked about finding the Big Five.
Did you find the Big Five?
Did you look that up and write to us?
Because you should!
That's right.
Well, now we're going to look at how you can actually explore Kruger National
Park.
That's right.
How do you see Kruger Park?
Now this is not asking how do you use your eyes.
It means how do you get to go and visit it.
That's right. What are the different ways you can experience this park?
Well, most would tell you to drive around the park yourself.
That sounds incredible, Ryan.
Yesterday we talked about just how large this park is.
So it's not a kind of park you want to walk through, especially with lions on
the loose.
But you do want to see it by yourself, so driving is a great idea, right?
Yeah, this actually sounds like it would be my favorite way to explore this
park:
Just to get in a car and go and drive and find the different animals or plants
or views that you want to find.
That's right. You know, but driving sometimes can sound a little intimidating.
So while that may sound intimidating, it's actually quite easy.
Yeah, it makes sense this might be intimidating since there are such large
animals around.
But it shouldn't be too dangerous.
Of course, the word "intimidating" is referring to when something makes you feel
afraid.
That's right. And you would feel afraid, Ryan, we talked about just the size of
this park.
It's huge! What if you got lost?
That's true. That could also make you intimidating as well.
But it says it's actually quite easy.
An extensive network of roads and 26 rest camps allow you to travel in the park
with ease.
Now a rest camp is an area where you can pull your vehicle off of the road,
and there... there would be buildings and probably bathrooms you could use,
and maybe food and drink to buy so you can stay refreshed and ready to go,
but at the same time, experiencing the park from all different places.
That's right, yeah. And it has an extensive network of roads here.
And so a network is when many things are connected together.
And it's extensive. That means it's huge.
It has many different parts, and you can see probably just about everything.
Now staying at a rest camp allows you to experience the evening and night sounds
of the animals.
So these rest camps are not... you can just stop for a refreshing break, but you
can also spend the night in this area.
Yeah. So you're not just going and seeing the lions and the tigers... well, I
don't know if there's tigers, but elephants in the day,
you are also getting to experience them at night.
And it says even the sounds of the animals at night.
So Ryan, do you think that hearing the night sounds of all these large animals
would be maybe a little bit scary?
Yeah, that doesn't sound fun, but you can hear these sounds.
And there's also a lot of lodging options at camps, there's something to suit
every traveler.
Now when we talk about "lodging," that is the place you can stay.
So if you're wanting to spend the night, you need safe lodging.
No matter where you go, this does not have to be in a park.
This can be anywhere, a hotel when you are traveling could be your lodging.
It's just where you are sleeping for the night.
That's right. And usually lodging would be temporary.
So it's a place you're staying just for a very short time, like you said, a
hotel or a tent, maybe even outdoors.
That's right.
Lodging would not refer to your own home; it would be somewhere you are
visiting.
So they offer different kinds of lodging.
Lodging, once again, refers to any place.
So what kinds of lodging are there?
Well, there's basic campsites or tents if you want to rough it.
So if you want to spend maybe a night out under the stars, you could go to one
of these basic campsites.
That's right.
And a campsite is where, well, we camp; a site being a location.
This is the place you go to camp.
And when we camp, we sleep outside, maybe in tents, maybe just out under the
stars.
But it's not going to have electricity.
There's not going to be running water.
You're going to have to probably carry your own water.
So if you want to rough it, this is the way to do it.
Yes. And that actually sounds like a lot of fun to me.
I love to rough it when I can.
And "roughing it" means that you are living in a place that is not very
comfortable,
with the least amount of things that you would bring along for comfort.
So for example, if you are camping, you would maybe not bring, you know, a nice
bed.
You would not have a very nice, warm place to stay.
You would just go live outside, make your own food and rough it.
That's right. You use only the basics when you are roughing it.
So food, water and lodging, and hopefully clothing because you need to stay warm
even if you are roughing it at night.
Now this is really an incredible way to experience the park.
If you stay in maybe a building, a different kind of lodging,
you would not hear as much or smell or see as much in the night.
But if you're, Ryan, if you're on a campsite, you're going to hear whatever
animal comes by.
Yeah. And that might be a little bit frightening for you if you are sleeping
outside and roughing it.
While that does sound fun, it could also be a little intimidating.
That's right. It could bring a little bit of fear.
But I know, I grew up camping in America, and I love it.
So I think the opportunity to camp in Africa will just be extremely exciting.
We don't have very many lions in America, do we?
No, we don't.
But I... I think it would still be an incredible experience as it is a park and
in these rest areas that you could stay at,
there would be safety involved.
So you would not have to worry about the animals coming to your campsite.
That's right. So if you want to experience Africa,
see some of these beautiful animals and maybe rough it a little bit, you can
travel to Kruger National Park.
Well, we're going to take a break really fast.
And then we'll come back and finish talking aboutKruger National Park
