Hello, friends.
Welcome back.
Today we are talking about Kruger National Park in South Africa.
And we're talking about how we can see it.
How can you visit Kruger National Park?
Earlier we learned that you can drive through it that that would be quite an
adventure through the extensive road network and rest areas.
Right before the break, we were talking about different lodgings to spend the
night.
First we talked about campsites and tents if you want to rough it in Africa.
Well, there are a few more ways to experience Kruger National Park.
Let's read about those now on line 5.
(Music).
Kruger National Park: It's Wild.
Family bungalows or huts provide comfortable beds and window screens to keep out
the bugs.
If you desire more comfort, you can book a luxurious guesthouse.
Some of the camps have restaurants, but all provide cooking facilities, and
guests can prepare their own meals.
Activities at the different camps vary depending on the environment.
For a fee, you may join guided morning or afternoon walks or game drives at
various times of the day.
Or just purchase a map and go on your own!
(Music).
Well, I like roughing it and going to campsites; not everyone does.
Especially if you are traveling with family, maybe you would want a different
kind of sleeping environment.
That's right. And there are many different options for those kind of people.
For example, family bungalows or huts provide comfortable beds and windows so
you can actually see what's going on outside.
Now a family bungalow, that is... that's really a fun word to say - bungalow.
But what does it mean?
Well, a "bungalow" is referring to a type of house that is only one story,
usually one that is not made out of modern materials.
That's right. So maybe if we're in Africa, it's made out of mud and tree
branches.
But it's made for families.
So it's not for just one person.
It has a... definitely has a good environment, so it has windows, walls, doors.
It's not like a tent.
You definitely have more protection.
And the windows have screens, so it helps keep out the bugs.
Yeah, that's right.
And of course, with those windows, you can leave the glass part open, you can
still hear the animals making noises at night.
But the screen is the type of material that goes on in front of the whole in the
window to keep out bugs.
Now Ryan, would a bungalow possibly have a bathroom in it?
Uh, I don't know, actually.
I think it could, though.
This will be an option if you want to experience Africa and have some of the
nature.
But at the same time, have a little bit more comfort and convenience than just a
campsite.
Yeah, it just might.
Of course, yeah, it is much more comfortable than a campsite.
You are not roughing it if you are staying in a bungalow.
But if you desire even more comfort, you can book a luxurious guesthouse.
Hmm, now that does sound nice and luxurious.
A guesthouse is referring to an actual home like a normal house that you would
think of,
and you can stay there with all of the comforts of your home.
That really does sound luxurious.
And luxurious means it's extremely comfortable, maybe a little bit fancy, maybe
something we're going to pay.
When it is luxurious, you have to pay a little bit more for it.
So camping would be really cheap.
Bungalows would be not too expensive.
But luxurious guesthouses would probably cost quite a bit.
Probably a lot more than a campsite, that's true.
But some of the camps have restaurants, but all provide cooking facilities.
So if you want to go and camp and just order food, you can choose a campsite, a
rest area that has a restaurant.
But if not, if you are adventure... adventurous enough and prepared, you can
cook at your own cooking facilities.
Yeah, they all have cooking facilities.
And "facility" is referring to the buildings or the tools or equipment required
for a certain purpose.
So here it's cooking facilities.
That means it has everything you need to cook.
Now Ryan, we talk about it being cooking facilities, it has an adjective here.
What if we just said "the facilities"?
Well, usually the phrase "the facilities" is referring to the bathroom.
That's right.
But here it is specifically cooking facilities, so it is the area that is
prepared for it.
And here guests can prepare their own meals.
So as part of living there, you can take care of yourself.
That's right. So no matter where you are staying, you can still prepare your own
food and still "rought it" in that sense.
That's right.
Activities at the different camps vary depending on the environment.
So not only do you have lodging and facilities to take care of yourself, they
also have different kinds of entertainment and activities.
That's right. You don't just have to go and see these animals, although that
sounds wonderful to me,
there is still plenty more to do at these campsites.
They offer many different activities depending on the environment or where they
are at.
Now that makes sense.
This park is huge, which means the land is going to be different.
It will be dry in some areas and wet in some areas, and mountains in some, and
plains, trees, no trees.
So depending on where you are depends on what kind of activities you can do.
That's right.
Now for example, for a fee, you may join guided morning or afternoon walks.
So in some of these places, if there are a nice environment, you can pay a fee,
which means you pay money, to join some of these guided walks.
Or game drives at various times of the day.
So you could do a morning or an evening, just a walk around.
Or you can do a drive to see the game, which, as we know, are the animals.
That's right, referring to the animals.
And they're guided, so there are people leading you.
It's not just you wandering around by yourself.
That's right.
And you can go at various times, which means different times of the day.
And that's good because animals live and do different things depending on the
time of day.
That's right. Actually, I know of the night safari in Singapore.
And that's another example of a place you can go to see animals and how they
behave at different times of the day, or various times of the day.
So these are options: You can walk; you can hire a guide; or just "purchase" a
map and go on your own.
All right. Now if you are the real adventurous type, you can do this: Purchase a
map.
That means just buy a map by yourself and just go and hope for the best.
Now Ryan, what would you do?
I would probably want a guided drive to see all the different animals.
That's right.
I would... that's probably what I would choose as well because, really, if I
ever have the option to visit Africa,
I want to see as many animals as I possibly can.
So going on a guided tour would be great.
Although, having your own map would be a fun adventure as well.
It would be an incredible adventure.
I just think, Kaylah, I would fear for my safety.
Well, with a guide, you would definitely be safe.
That's true.
Well, friends, how would you like to see Kruger National Park?
Where would you stay?
How would you experience the animals?
Write to us and tell us at letters@StudioClassroom.com.
That's right.
Join us tomorrow as our adventure on Kruger National Park comes to a close.
Until then, let's visit the Chat Room.
So how was lunch with your friend?
It was great, Ken.
He just came back from his vacation in Africa.
And he had pictures of his game drive.
They were amazing.
Uh, hang on.
I know what a game is, but what's a game drive?
A game drive is when you take a car trip through an area where you can see wild
animals in nature.
That sounds exciting.
But what does it have to do with games?
Well, the word "game" actually has two meanings.
Oh, right! I just read an article in Studio Classroom that taught the word
"game," which was referring to animals that people hunt.
That's right.
And the largest animals like lions and elephants are called big game.
"Game" can also be used as an adjective in phrases like game animals.
Game drives used to involve hunting game animals.
But now it's illegal to hunt most of those.
OK. That makes sense.
Speaking of the word "game," what does the phrase "fair game" mean?
Well, Ken, when it's easy or acceptable to criticize or attack someone, you can
say that person is "fair game." So for example,
many journalists think that celebrities are fair game.
If celebrities do something embarrassing, journalists consider it OK to
criticize them.
OK. What about the phrase "I'm game"?
Now that means something totally different.
If someone suggests doing something and you say, "I'm game," it means you're
willing to do it.
It's really casual, though.
So when Matt asked if you wanted to have lunch together, you could have said
"I'm game"?
Yes, I could have.
Speaking of which, I invited Matt over to my house for dinner tonight.
Would you like to come too?
I think you and Matt would really get along well.
Yeah, I'm game.
Thanks for inviting me.
Sure. I'll see you tonight.
OK.
(Chinese).
(Chinese).
And we're running out of time.
I'll see you tomorrow. Bye-bye.
Thank you, Michelle.
We appreciate those tips.
Friends, how would you like it if a herd of elephants came running through your
house?
Right. You wouldn't like it, would you?
So when you're visiting Kruger National Park or any animal habitat for that
matter,
it's important to use common sense and remember: You are the visitor.
Park rangers warn against attracting animals attention by imitating their
sounds, clapping or throwing things.
They say these actions might result in an "unpredictable" and potentially
dangerous response from the animals.
I think what they're saying is you could get yourself killed, or worse.
OK, friends, I hope the rest of your Friday is fantastic.
Please join us tomorrow for day three of Kruger National Park.
Bye-bye.
