So Linda, what article are we looking at today?
Well, today we are going to begin our first day of a three-day article on Yuna
Kim.
She is very impressive.
She is, isn't she?
Well, Linda, who exactly is Yuna Kim?
Well, she is a superstar in South Korea.
And she's also a skater.
OK. I know who you're talking about.
Wasn't she South Korea's representative for the 2018 Olympics?
That's right, she was.
And she set some records at the 2010 Winter Olympics, I think.
She did!
She set new records for the Short Program and also for the Free Program at the
2010 Olympics.
You know, she began skating as a young child.
And in fact, her mother made many sacrifices to take her to lessons and to make
sure she had good coaches.
The mother and daughter even moved abroad so Yuna could get better training.
Wow! That's a dedicated mother.
And when she was a teenager competing, the judges said she skated so fast, she
was a blur.
Wow! That is fast.
She won the World Championships in 2007 and 2008.
You know, and even more impressive, she won the Four Continents Championship in
those years as well.
So if you want to learn more about this champion skater, don't go away.

Meet the young woman who has been named "the greatest skater of all time!".
Magazine cover shoots, television specials, commercials and skating practice all
keep Yuna Kim busy these days.
The whole of South Korea loves her.
But how does a girl from the small city of Gunpo become her country's "national
hero"?
Kim's journey has been filled with hard work and the strong support of her
family.
Discovering Kim's talent.
When Kim began ice skating at the age of 6, her coach recognized that she was
special.
(Music).

My name is Ryan.
And my name is Kaylah.
And today we are talking about Yuna Kim - South Korea's Queen of Figure Skating.
All right. Now we've talked about skating before, Kaylah.
This is when you wear special kind of equipment, like shoes, on your feet that
allow you to glide on ice.
But what is figure skating?
Well, "figure skating" is a form of skating.
It's very beautiful to watch.
It is... involves a lot of patterns on the ice, a lot of circles on the ice as
well as jumps,
which, when you think about it, that's really hard to jump on ice, especially in
skates.
Yes, it's actually really difficult for people to do.
But it is beautiful.
You can almost think of figure skating as dancing on ice.
That's right.
It's wonderful to watch.
I hope you have had a chance to watch it.
If not, you should look up Yuna Kim and see her beautiful skating.
That's true. You can see pictures of her skating, or figure skating, on page 36
of your Studio Classroom magazine.
Well, today we are taking time to meet the young woman who has been named "the
greatest skater of all time!".
Now that is quite a phrase.
If you say someone is the greatest of all time, that means there is no one who
is better than them or has ever been better than them.
That is an incredible title, Ryan.
I grew up watching figure skating every year with my mother.
I loved it as a child.
But Yuna Kim is taking it to a new level.
She is the best there has ever been.
That's true. It requires a lot of talent.
People need to know how to figure skate, and it is very difficult.
And she makes it look very easy.
Well, magazine cover shoots, television specials, commercials and skating
practice all keep Yuna Kim busy these days.
Yeah. Now she is busy, obviously, not just skating.
But now she's on magazines taking pictures as well as in commercials, which are
also known as ads.
That's right, an advertisement that is broadcast, that is shown on TV, radio, or
in magazines.
That's right. And so she's taking a lot of time out of her days to be in these
commercials, be in these magazine shoots.
And it really would be really busy.
Really, I guess a "commercial," what makes it separate from her magazines would
be that it's actually action.
You can either hear her voice or you can see her.
That is what makes it a commercial.
Right.
Usually when we use the word commercial, we're referring to television
commercials, or perhaps something you might see on the Internet.
But it's usually in the form of a video.
Well, the whole of South Korea loves her.
And I can see why.
That's right.
That means everyone in South Korea just loves Yuna Kim.
But how does a girl from the small city of Gunpo become her country's "national
hero"?
Well, this is what we want to talk about today.
How did Yuna Kim become so popular and become so good at what she does?
She became a national hero.
And that means the entire nation - national - thinks of her as a hero, someone
who is... they can look up to, who they respect.
She's a national hero.
So the whole nation loves her.
Yeah. And we'd love to talk about her journey.
We see that it has been filled with hard work and strong support of her family.
And so she's had a really long journey getting here.
She doesn't... she wasn't just born with this fame, and she wasn't just born a
national hero.
That's right. A "journey" is really a trip.
It is the act of traveling from one place to another, especially in a vehicle if
we're talking about moving.
But here it's a little bit special.
We can also say "a journey in life." So that means you go from one place to
another throughout your life.
Yeah, if you're talking about a person's journey, you are referring to their
experience - what has she done that has got her to where she is today.
Well, her journey's been filled with hard work and the support of her family.
But part of that came from discovering Kim's talent.
When Kim began ice skating at the age of 6, her coach recognized that she was
special.
Yeah. Now this is incredible already, Kaylah, she's staring at the age of six.
That is so young.
But we're going to see how she used that talent at an early age to become what
she is today.
Before we take this break, let's watch today's skit.
Ladies and gentlemen, we are so honored to be here in the arena watching Yuna
Kim take the ice.
That's right.
Yuna Kim, South Korea's queen of figure skating is warming up for her skate.
I'd like to take some time to share with our viewers a little bit about Yuna.
Hmm, good idea.
We have all seen her in magazines, commercials and TV specials.
But let's learn a little bit about this amazing figure skater.
Well, first, let's talk about the amazing journey she has had from a small town
girl to a national hero.
Yuna started skating when she was only six years old.
But her coach saw that she had the talent to be a true champion skater.
With her family's help and her devotion to skating, Yuna Kim was successful in
the complicated triple jump in figure skating at the young age of ten.
That is incredible.
I have a hard time skating on ice, I can't imagine jumping.
You can skate.
I have a hard time just standing on the ice.
Sometimes I even slip.
(Backgroud Noise).
