Hello, everybody.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
Thanks for joining us today taking time out of your busy day to study English
with us.
My name is Steve.
And I'm confused.
Kaylah, why are you confused?
Well, I want to give some money to a charity.
But there are so many to choose from.
Here, let me see.
OK... Wow! Wow, you're right about that.
I know.
How do I choose the right one?
Well, Kaylah, do you know what kind of charity you want to give your money to?
Yes, but there are still so many to choose from.
How do I find one that I can trust?
Well, Kaylah, that's a good question.
You want to make sure you give your money to an honest and helpful charity,
right?
Exactly.
Well, then you should join us as we read and learn how to choose a good charity.
Really?
Oh, what website?
No, Kaylah, not on the Internet.
It's on page 48 of your Studio Classroom magazine.
(Music).
How to Choose a Charity You Can Trust.
Hints for wise giving.
When you learn about the lives of needy people, you may feel a strong desire to
help them.
Giving to a charity can be a practical step.
But some charities are managed better than others.
Before you give, use the following guidelines to make sure your chosen charity
is honest and effective.
Investigate the charity.
Checking a charity's own website can help, but it's safest to get some other
opinions.
Many governments provide lists of groups that are officially registered as
charities.
Thank you for joining us.
My name is Ryan.
And my name is Kaylah.
And today we're talking about how to choose a charity you can trust.
Now Kaylah, I see that you have a baby bottle full of money on our desk.
Yes.
What is that about?
Well, this baby bottle is one of the charities I support.
Oh. Can you tell me a little bit about that charity?
Sure! Um, when I was in high school, we used to collect money in baby bottles to
raise money to help young mothers.
So this is what the bottle represents.
OK. And were you sure, Kaylah, that that was a charity you could trust?
It was absolutely a charity I could trust.
And we can talk about how you figure that out today.
Exactly. We're going to give you some hints for wise giving.
Being wise with your giving is very important because you want... when you give,
you want to be able to reach people.
And you have to be wise to do that.
Exactly. And when you're giving money to a charity,
which is like an organization that takes your money and then makes sure they try
and help other people, you want to make sure that they are honest.
Well, when you learn about the lives of needy people, you may feel a strong
desire to help them.
Yeah. Of course, if you see someone who is "needy," that person is poor.
That means they need help and you would obviously be filled with a strong desire
to help them.
Often this refers to people who do not have food, clothing or shelter, or any of
the three options.
So you would want to give to them because they have nothing, and we are very
blessed to have so much.
Yes. Now in the word "needy," you also see the word "need." And that means these
people are in need.
And of course, like Kaylah said, we have, and therefore, we want to give.
Giving to a charity can be a practical step.
So you see someone in need, you want to help them. Giving to a charity can help.
Yes. And of course, it's a practical step.
A step is referring to the next thing you want to do.
But what does the word "practical" mean, Kaylah?
It means that it makes sense.
It's something that you could do to help.
Yeah. So of course you want to give to a charity because you want to help
people, but you want to make sure you can trust the charity.
We see some charities are managed better than others.
Now this is a very common problem.
When you give money to an organization that is helping people, sometimes there
are problems in that organization.
Unfortunately, in this world, there are not honest people.
There are a lot of people that would lie to you to get your money, or they only
give some of the money, or sometimes they just don't care at all.
And you want to make sure you choose the ones that are giving, that are a
positive thing to do.
Right. And so before you give, use the following guidelines to make sure your
chosen charity is honest and effective.
Now "guidelines" are information that we give to help something so it can be
done easier or to show you what should be done.
So here we're going to give you "guidelines" on how to pick a charity: so
instructions on things to look for.
Yeah. That's a good word, Kaylah, instructions.
Guidelines are basically a list of things that you should do in order to achieve
something.
That's right.
So first of all, we're going to talk about investigating the charity.
All right. Now when you investigate something, it means you look closely at it
and make sure it is, in this case, trustworthy.
Now people that most commonly investigate would be detectives or police officers
or even firemen investigate things.
But you can investigate anything.
A baby investigates their new world usually by putting stuff in their mouths.
Which could be dangerous and hopefully... well, luckily, I should say,
investigating a charity does not involve you putting anything in your mouth.
We're going to give you a guideline now on how you can properly investigate a
charity.
Well, checking a charity's own website is a great place to start.
Yes. It can help, but it's safest to get some other opinions.
That's right. It's a good place to get started.
You want to look at it, see what they are advertising, see what they want you to
know about their organization, the work that they say they are doing.
But it's important to have second opinions.
Exactly. And that's actually a good point for many different things, Kaylah.
We had an article in the past about finding trustworthy information on the
Internet.
There are many times you want to look at the Internet to find information, but
it might be best to get other opinions as well.
That's right. And we say "a second opinion," that just means other opinions.
We often get second opinions from doctors.
Right. Now many governments do provide lists of groups that are officially
registered as charities.
So a government's an... the organization that runs a country, you can register
your charity through them.
So what does it mean to be registered?
Well, if you're "registered," that means it is kept on record.
They have your name on a list.
The governments are saying that these charities are really trustworthy
charities.
So the government has given them the OK to be a charity that we can trust.
All right. So take a look at this list and you can know that you can trust these
charities.
Join us after the break as we continue talking about what charities you can
trust.
But before we go, let's take a look at the skit.
Oh, me. Oh, mine. There are so many needy people in the world.
Yes, it's sad, but true.
So what can I do to help them?
Giving to a charity can be a practical step.
Ooh! Excellent idea.
I'm going to give to lots of charities.
Uh, Grandpa, some charities are managed better than others.
Really?
Yes. Look for a charity that's honest and effective.
Well, how will I know?
Here are some guidelines for wise giving.
Guidelines?
Yes.
Investigate charities.
Check their website and get other opinions too for safety.
That's a good idea.
Many governments provide lists of officially registered charities.
Let's look that up.
OK.
Other websites focus on rating charities too.
Check out Charity Navigator.
Charity Navigator! Let's take a look.
Charities are rated based on their efficient use of money and their ability to
make a positive difference.
Oh. Wow! These sites have an interactive world map.
Look for a charity that uses most of its money for their causes.
You mean some don't?
No. Badly managed charities may only give a fraction of dollars to their causes.
What about the rest?
They spend most of their money on salaries.
Well, shame on them.
They're not getting any of my money!
