To comprehend the text in detail by comparison and interpretation. 3. To understand the love from parents and learn to love back. Teaching focus Compare the two students’ family life and build up the comprehension of the text step by step. Teaching difficulties Provoke thoughts about parental love and family value. Teaching methods Self-study, pair work, group discussion Learning procedures Teacher’s activity Students’ activity Learning purpose T I M E Part 1- Pre- reading Step 1: Free talk Ask a question: What family activities do you usually do? Brain storm and talk about family activities. To recall family life and get a general idea of the topic. 2 Step 2: Read through and circle words Get students to read through the passage and explain new words and phrases. Read the passage quietly, listen to the word explanation and identify new words in the passage. To comprehend the new words and expressions. 3 Step3: Summarize key words for each part Demonstrate key words. Read the passage for a second time and find out main idea for each part. To narrow the focus and understand the content quickly. 5 Part 2- While reading Step 4: Compare Emily’s and Jerry’s family life. Facilitate the access to detailed information. Fill in a form and compare the two students’ family life. To comprehend the text in detail. 5 Step 5: About “I” Help the students to make a clear and logical speech. Introduce their own family life accordingly. To express the ideas with what they have learnt. 5 Step 6: Read between lines 1) Assist the Ss to get a better understanding by asking questions. 2) Help the Ss dive deeper and get a hidden meaning. 3) Help the Ss to understand “love” and “family value”. 1) Be involved in thinking about and discussing questions. 2) Talk about love from their own parents 3) Participate in the discussion about family value.
