Teaching Plan Topic Oxford English 8A Unit 1 Encyclopaedias LessonType reading Students Grade 8 Teacher Huang Learningobjectives By the end of the class, students are expected to improve:1. Thinking Quality i) Know more about the order and aspects to describe a person; ii) learn how to do further reading. 4. Cultural Awareness Understand what makes a person successful. Key points 1. Students need to think more about the articles and learn to ask questions on the materials instead of just reading them. What’s the film about?2. Who is mentioned in the film? Lead in the topic and arouse students’ interest. Step 2: Pre-reading(Study skill &Culture corner) 1. Show the picture of encyclopaedias to Ss and ask them: -What is an encyclopaedia? -What are the subjects arranged in the Encyclopaedia Britannica?2. Play a memory game. 1. Try to understand what an encyclopaedia is.2. Know the order of the subjects arranged in the Encyclopaedia Britannica.3. Remember some facts about the Encyclopaedia Britannica by playing the game. 1. Guide Ss to search for information in encyclopaed ias.2. Introduce detailed information about the Encyclopae dia Britannica. Step 3: While-Reading 1. Ask Ss to do a quiz. 2. Ask Ss questions after they skim the title and pictures in Text 1.3. Play the record and ask Ss to fill in the table.4. Ask Ss to think about the aspects mentioned about Da Vinci. 1. Finish the quiz. 2. Answer the questions: -what does the phrase “look up” mean? -What is Da Vinci known as?3. Fill in the table. 4. Learn more words about jobs. 1. Why or why not? 1. Help Ss get detailed information about Da Vinci.2. Encourage Ss to express personal opinions. Step 5: Post-reading 1. Help Ss to arrange their topic by using spider map.2. Assign students to make a report on a great person they interested in with their group members. 3. Ask Ss to have a further discussion: -What makes a person succeed? 1. Group work: Cooperate with their teammates to report on the great person they are interested in.2. Think about the elements that help people succeed. 1.
