Hi, everyone, and welcome to Let's Talk in English.
My name is Andrea.
And we have a new week of lessons just for you.
Our first topic this week is clothes and shopping.
You're going to learn how to talk about shopping for winter clothes.
And the title of our lesson is Winter Clothes.
Now Kevin, I know you like to talk about clothes, don't you?
Uh... sometimes.
Sometimes I like to talk about clothes.
But I don't talk about it too often.
Now my name is Kevin.
And I'm very happy to be here with you.
Let's begin with our Let's Begin reading.
Andrea.
Let's Begin.
Megan is from Florida.
So she doesn't have a coat.
She doesn't have many winter clothes.
She only has one sweater.
Susie gave Megan a winter hat and gloves.
But Megan left them in the office yesterday!
Ooh, it looks like Megan is going to be a little cold.
Let's take a look in Conversation A.
Hello, Megan. How are you today?
Hi, Ken. I'm a little cold.
Did you just get here?
Yes. The weather is very cold today.
Where is your coat?
I don't have a coat.
Why don't you have a coat?
I'm from Florida!
I didn't need a coat in Florida.
Well, you need a coat here.
In Conversation A, you saw Ken and Megan, and they were talking.
Megan told Ken that she's a little cold.
Now remember, Megan is from Florida.
Florida is a state in the United States.
Now Kevin, tell us, is Florida usually a hot state or a state with warm weather,
or a cold state - a state with cold weather?
Well, Florida is a lot like my home state, Texas.
It's hot and warm.
So I understand why Megan would not have a coat.
Right, she doesn't have a coat.
Ken says, "Where is your coat?" Now where's our key word?
Well, it's right there in that question.
Let's talk about it.
The key word is "coat." Now a coat is something that you wear over your clothes.
You often wear a coat to stay warm.
That's right.
So let me use "coat" in a sentence.
It is really cold outside.
Make sure you wear a coat.
Or, your coat looks really, really comfortable.
Or you can say: It's hot today.
I don't need a coat.
Well, we see another phrase in this conversation.
Megan says, "The weather is very cold today." Now you can use this sentence when
you're talking about the weather.
The weather is very cold today.
Or the weather is very hot today.
What else can you say, Kevin?
You can say, well, the weather is very dry today.
Or the weather is very dark today.
So if the weather is very cold, be sure to wear a coat.
Now let's continue with Conversation B.
I'm waiting for a good sale.
Then I can buy some winter clothes.
Do you have any winter clothes?
I have one sweater.
You only have one sweater?
Yes. I wear it a lot!
Some stores are having sales.
I know.
Their winter clothes are 50 percent off.
So we see Megan wants to buy some winter clothes to stay warm.
And that brings us to our next key word.
And that key word is: clothes.
clothes.
Now clothes is something you wear on your body to cover yourself.
This shirt is clothes.
These pants can be called clothes.
What else can be called clothes?
Well, anything that you wear on your body.
Shirts, pants, a jacket, shorts.
These are all different kind of clothes that we wear.
In the winter, you might wear many clothes to stay warm.
That's right.
And it looks like Megan does not have many warm clothes.
In fact, she only has one sweater.
Now that brings us to our next key word.
And that is: sweater.
Now a sweater is something you put on the top of your body... on the top part of
your body.
And it usually does not have buttons that go all the way down.
So sweater is nice and warm.
Andrea, do you have a favorite sweater?
I do have a favorite sweater.
My favorite sweater is blue.
And it's very long and very warm.
My favorite sweater is also very comfortable.
I like to wear it on cold days.
And it keeps me nice and warm.
Well, my favorite sweater has the word "Texas" on it because I went to the
University of Texas, and I'm proud of my school.
So I love wearing that sweater.
Now Megan wants to buy some more clothes, but she's waiting for a good sale.
And she says sometimes sales can be 50 percent off.
50 percent off.
Now when we say "percent off," that means a part of 100 percent.
So when it is 50 percent off, that means you pay half the price.
50 percent is a good deal, isn't it?
That is a good deal.
So if a sweater is $30, but it's 50 percent off, how much is the sweater?
It would be $15.
Well, that concludes our Conversation B discussion.
Let's move on to Conversation C.
That is a good sale.
What are you waiting for?
I am waiting for a really good sale!
In February, winter clothes are 80 or 90 percent off!
How do you know that?
Susie told me.
Susie knows about sales.
Susie is nice.
She gave me a winter hat and gloves.
Why aren't you wearing them?
I left them here yesterday!
Susie is nice.
She gave Megan a winter hat and gloves.
A winter hat.
Well, that's one of our key words.
And Kevin and I wanted to celebrate this key word a little bit with some special
hats.
Yes, I think this hat looks awesome!
It does look really good, Kevin.
"Hat" is our key word.
And a hat is something that you wear on your head.
Now there are many different kinds of hats.
Some hats keep your head warm.
Those are called winter hats.
And some hats just look cool.
And uh, well, some hats just look kind of funny.
No. I know you're definitely not talking about my hat.
My hat is cool.
Yes, uh, that's right, Kevin.
OK. Well, we talked about hats.
Now let's talk about another key word.
The key word is "glove." Now a glove is something that you wear on your hand.
A glove has a place for each of your fingers and your thumb.
Again, you can wear winter gloves to keep your hands warm when it's cold.
But you also might wear gloves for other reasons.
You can wear gloves to protect your hands.
Or you might wear special gloves like biking gloves when you ride your bike.
That's right.
You can also wear special gloves to catch things easier, like football players.
American football players, they have gloves to help them catch a ball better.
Well, Megan does have a few winter things now.
She has one sweater.
She has a winter hat and gloves, thanks to Susie.
But she is waiting for a really good sale.
She wants to buy winter clothes when they are 80 or 90 percent off.
So Kevin, if a sweater is $100.
Sure.
But there is a sale for 80 percent off.
OK.
How much would you pay?
You would pay $20.
And if the sale is 90 percent off?
You would only pay $10.
Wow! That's a great sale.
That's a really great sale.
And we have a really fun part of our show next.
It's time to review our key words.
Please practice them with us.
coat.
coat.
Please wear your coat today.
Then you can be warm.
clothes.
clothes.
Jen loves clothes.
Her closet is full!
sweater.
sweater.
Sam wears a sweater on cold days.
hat.
hat.
Is your head cold?
You can wear this hat.
gloves.
gloves.
I can't find my gloves.
My hands are cold.
Well Kevin, maybe we should take our hats off.
I'm not taking this awesome hat off!
Oh, OK. OK.
Well friends, we'll be rightback.
